Bit of a 'techie' questions as i'm rubbish with PC stuff.

My Norton Internet Security has just expired.I'm able to buy the NIS 2008 version my question is, will this version load over the 2007 version i currently have or will i have to delete the 2007 version first? What's easier or best??

Thanks Al.

I wouldn't recommend installing ontop of each other, i'd remove the older version first.

As a qualified techie... I couldn't recommend NIS full stop.

Personally for home users I'd recommend Outpost Security Suite 2008 (best all-rounder in my opinion)(http://www.agnitum.com/products/security-suite/)

But in answer to your question, if your just paying for another subscription then this usually means just another serial number to enter into your product.

But it sounds like your upgrading to a later version. in which case both versions shouldn't be installed on one PC (unless your multi-os booting in which case you could have a different version on each os but I presume your not and if not then ignore the text in these brackets!)

Norton "should" recommend you uninstall the previous version before installing the new version (maybe part of the installation process of the new version) and will probably ask about using the settings from your old version (like firewall rules) so I wouldn't be worrying about uninstalling the previous version and let the new installer do all the work for you!

if not (if it fails to unistall NIS 2007 for you), cancel the installation, uninstall yourself (Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>find Norton 2007>Click Remove or Change/Remove and follow the prompts) then install your new version.

Hope that helps. If not then PM me for more info!

Remove it altogether & install Avast antivirus instead, its free, uses less resources & works a treat. :thumb:

Ive switched all my home network (7 pc`s) to Avast & also installed a full office (over 40 pc`s) with it, all running smooth & sweet now for over 4 months with none of the bulk of other antivirus software such as Mcafee & Norton.

You can download it free from here Avast

Free registration enables updates after the 30 days, cant complain at that for what i have found to be the best av around imho.

theirs nothing wrong with mcafee as long as your using the right version  the home products like all home products is just overbloated crap, the corporate version on the other hand is the best antivirus front and backend i have ever seen.. epo server is THE dog balls allowing complete control over all local installs of the desktop client

but for home use id suggest firefox for your normal browsing as its safer than IE and avg antivirus.. you dont need any firewall software as your probably behind a NAT anyway.. and for dodgy browsing use vmware server which is totally free and have xp with firefox or something running in a virtual enviroment so that once you finished browsing you just revert the enviroment back to where it was afterwards therefore never getting any dodgy pop ups etc

Firstly cheers for all the replies!

I've been to 'Add and remove programmes' but cannot find Norton 2007 anywhere??

I've got Live update 3.1

Norton Internet Security (symantec corporation) 30.60 MB

Loads of windows updates on certain dates etc???

Also Windows XP hotfixs???????

Any ideas how to remove NIS 2007 or is it a case of removing the above, some/all?

Probably install Avast.

Get rid of both 'Live Update 3.1' and 'Norton Internet Security (symantec corporation)'... should ask you to restart... do so then install which ever security app you want.

Avast isn't too bad... pish when compared to Nod32 but Nod32 isn't exactly user friendly... you need to have a half decent idea idea on how to get the best out of Nod32 to use it. - If your happy with Avast then go for it!

But it's just an Anit-Virus app so I'd recommend a software firewall (freebies include Zone Alarm I think... unless something has changed - But I'm an Outpost fanboy so I'd personally recommend Outpost firewall) Why? Yes, you probably have a firewall as part of your router.... but that will only protect you against "hack" attacks and such like... the software firewall will allow you control on what apps are allowed access to the internet, hopefully acting as a last resort for those who get past your router's firewall and most now protect system file/folder and system changes (preventing nasties from injecting themselves into system files which then leave your system crippled after you removed the nasty) meaning they are becoming an ideal partner to A/V software (whereas in the past they were good but didn't really partner A/V software as much as they do now)

Hope that helps... It's a lot to take in... but its all in the name of security!

You seen the new version of NOD32? Hell of a lot more user friendly....however the nsane patch doesn't work with it....yet ;)

I wouldnt bother with Norton, I know a few people who have had problems with the new one and uninstalled it and asked for a refund.

As Im not very tech minded I couldnt tell u what the problems were sorry.

I can't say I have... is this, this v3 thats out? had load of betas sent about some major development but I could never be arsed to look into it!

Might install it tomorrow on a VM... Great thing about beta testing... you don't need patches/cracks or other peoples serials... just the serials emailed you direct from the company :pancake:

Still got 4 20 user licence keys in my name for Vista Ultimate... not bothered with that yet! (still use the beta keys on VMware installs... then again I still use RC2 for experiments)

I'll give an opinion on the new Nod32 version tomorrow!

Sorry for going offtopic

Yup, its v3. Couldnt be arsed with the testing builds either, only installed it because it was whinging at me. And now its whinging about not having a user/pass...

Anyway, this should do you lol..
