Hi all.

In the next few weeks i should hopfully have £100-£150 spare cash to spend on my car, haven't bought anything for a while lol. I want to spend most if not all on some nice bigger and better brakes, because frankly the bog standard lx ones are rubbish and look utter pants behind 5 spokes.

I was first thinking the easy route of rs2000 diskes, calipers and pads, but then i want something more adventourous, like an st170 disks, mondy v6 calipers and pads.

Whats the better options in terms of money? How easy are the st170 disks etc. going to fit?

Would it be better to go with just RS2000 ones?

Comments and opinions plz peeps

100-150....

secondhand RS2k calipers £30

New discs and pads - 65-90

Braided hoses - £30

I have just bought St170 calipers, carriers, bolts and discs for £145 delivered.Took me about a week to source. From what I have read in the forum they bolt straight on,just have to drill the mounting holes out to 12mm on the hubs and use a shorter banjo bolt if you keep the escort hoses. :thumb:

Cheers guys

If i decide on not respraying my bonnet i will have an extra £150. Would there be any point getting the rear brake rear beam too? seeing as i'll be upgrading the front brakes too?

I like the combination you suggested rob. New disks anmd pads woul;d be very nice and ive only heard very good things about braided hoses. How much does anyone reckon a garage would charge to fit these?

Andrew, i was going for the st170 etc. set up but can't be bothered sources the parts lol. RS stuff is pee easy to find

Does your car have the ABS system with 4 green pipes coming off it, it is opposite side to the battery to check if you don't already know  if it has this ABS system then forget about the rear beam as it wont work with that ABS system :(

Go for Mondeo V6. One of the cheaper options and means you can use Escort Cossie discs.

Here's some 4x4 Siera Cosworth Calipers on Ebay...

my car doesnt have ABS :D so thats ok then. I just hate drums and think some rear brakes would just make the car look so much better and brake too of course :)

i do like the st170/cosworth disks and v6 caliper combitation, there is just amazing stopping power ij those but i just can't really be asked with the hassle of srilling the calipers and getting them to fit. plus i don't really know how much a garage would charge to fit. have to do a bit of pestering wednesday lol

mutley, i'll let you know about those calipers mate when i make my mind up lol. Cheers for the offer :thumb:

you dont drill the caliper you drill the hub.. from 10mm to 12mm :thumb:

Its not difficult at all. As long as your confident with working on cars. Me and Scoop did make a how-to, but it was lost when the server or whatever went down.

the how to is out there,2 secs ill refind.

Oh,and i fitted the V6 brakes from the DEW when i had it to my current car over this weekend,it was a little bit of a faff with stubborn bolts and whathaveyou but no biggy, and on my trip into saint andrews today....PHWOAR!! its like hitting a wall....compared to boggo escort brakes anyway

Oh right, cheers folks

I'll probably be thinking about this for days lol. RS, no cossie, no rs, no cossie and so on lol

The biggest problem i have is fitting them. the biggest thing ive ever done on my car, mechanical wise, would probably be changing the air filter lol. i fear a garage is going to rape me to fit cossie/v6 brakes :(

Go the V6 way mate, its incredibley cheap if ur smart, and i dont reckon a garage would rape u if ur smart (ie get the hoses, mount them in a bracket and get the bolts, washers for them, then simply tell them, take old one off drill hole, fit washers fit calipers and away u go,are there any hands-on evo members local to u?
