does anybody know why some cars with turbos make a pssssshhhht sound and others kinda sound like there winding down if that makes sense ?

is it to do with the dump valve or somthing else ?

sorry if thats a silly question just always wonderd.

jim..

pst noises are dumpvalves and by winding down im gonna assume u mean the chatter, that is the noise u get when all the pressurised air isnt released when the throttle is closed,so the pressure bounces between compressor blades and throttle body creating said noise.

ALL turbo'd cars have a wastegate, and they make a slight whistling noise, and if u have an external wastegate with screamer pipe then they make a noise similar to a loud exhaust

cheers for that so i take it if you want the chatter noise you need to up the boost get a recurculating dv or adjustable one and wind it in and try and get as little as poss between the compressor and filter to stop sound deadening.

would that be right ?

jim..

No.

there are many many ways to get chatter, some cars do it as standard (in fact,a lot probably do but u cant hear it)

More boost will make it more noticable

Fitting a cone and removing the airbox will make it more noticeable

As will having a really tight dump valve

But the best way is probably to have no dump/recirc valve at all

for turbo chatter or turbo stalling whatever you want to call it,fit a big cone filter etc... and retain the recirc dv.
my dads cossie made an amazing chatter when he just fitted a grp A airfilter, was so gutted he fitted the dumpvalve after.
Compressor Surge (chatter) occurs when you have NO dump valve.........
Compressor Surge (chatter) occurs when you have NO dump valve.........

I've looked into this stu and chatter is compressor STALL, compressor SURGE is something entirely different and harmful to the turbo.and STALL can occur even with a dump valve, all depends how quick the pressure can be dumped,if its dumped slowly then it still has the chance to stall the turbo

Don't believe all you read.

stall is harmful to the turbo

you can still hear the chatter occasionally behind the pssssttt on my oldmans cossie...

so why should we beleive what you say ?

Exactly.
so if we're not to believe what we read in articles on turbo attributes, and we're not to believe you,how the fcuk are we supposed to know what turbo stall and surge is??
