I know this has been asked a million times over, i did a search and read sooooo many posts!

But my prob seems strange. I have acquired another cheap Gti that has an idle problem. It doesnt idle at all!!

I have looked through all the possible causes and none seem to quite match what i have. The car will start first time and sounds perfect and revs and drives lovely. But if you take your foot off the accelerator, it dies immediately. It doesnt splutter or mess about, it just dies. It does this when cold or warm.

I have checked parts by swapping bits with my black gti (which is perfect). The MAF is fine, vacuum hoses seem okay, VISUALLY checked wiring, TPS seems to be okay (i tested it as Stu describes in another topic).

The only things remaining as far as i can see is: ECU, loom problem, ICV, or the crankcase breather.

Im told though that if the crankcase breather is blocked that this would only cause a problem when the car is warm. (is that correct?!?)

Bugging me this one is. (nobody else when i searched seemed to have an identical problem, any ideas?)

heard the ICV jammed in closed position does exactly what you describe, if for no other reason than self assurance...whip it off and check its mechanism movement.

Someone on ere can likely tell you if they operate movement wise when their off the engine but still plugged in, at least enough for you to see if it moves at all, failing that you can probably note a jammer ICV visually maybe?

could be the crank case breather i had that problem when i fitted a2l into my old gti and was doing exactley as you say is happening (do you know where this is) if not that then could be worth cleaning idelc control valve and if that doesnt cure it then start looking elsewhere mate

Im guessing i need to replace the valve in the crankcase breather or can it be cleaned?

you could try just popping your crank case breather pipe off the crank cover and seeing if that helps at all(if its blocked it will)

as for the ICV a cleaning might help but tbh if its gotten so bad were as its locked in a single position youd probably be better of sourcing a newun as less dramatic ICV problems usually only result in a bad idle and not a complete lack of one

is the pipe actually attatched to the back of the inlet? as i forgot to put the pipe on which casued it to die

done this when i did an engine swap, i forgot to put the hose which goes to the back of the inlet manifold, started and went as long as i had my foot on the accelerator.

All pipes are attached, checked them visually.

Im going to try the crankcase breather, shouldnt cost me anything!!

have you followed the pipe round to the back of inlet (hard to get at) and made sure no vissable holes

Yes, but perhaps i need to be far more thorough, as i was just looking for the obvious big splits etc
other than that cant really help as have had no other problems i take it it has the black plastic inlet?

It has the black plastic inlet.

I have looked at the crankcase breather, not blocked at all.

Had the ICV off, it seems to move quite freely inside, although it doesnt seem to stay in the fully closed or open position on its own.

Checked hoses quite thoroughly, and they seem okay. To make the car stall immdeiately, a hose would have to be off or severely damaged i would have thought.

Its p*ssing me off now. Ford diagnostics i reckon before i pay for any parts. :thumb:

disconnect the hose (and block it) from the top of the breather valve then try it, the valve doesnt block it just fooks up

£20 from ford tho, look like a quids worth to me the gits
