zetec2k6
Not posted for a while on here, but thought I'd start a thread on my new car I picked up a couple of weeks ago. It's a BMW 318i ( already stated in title ) Was originally looking for a 318iS but thought insurance would be a bit steep. It's pretty much standard apart from AC Schnitzer type 3 alloys and a rather naff fitted boot spoiler. It has a couple of rust sports but nothing too serious, very clean interior and a pretty good runner to say it's done 151k. Pics aren't anything special as I haven't been anywhere to get decent pics yet http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/167520_10150102860222122_610212121_6125529_1853244_n.jpghttp://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/168616_10150102860302122_610212121_6125532_809608_n.jpghttp://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/167857_10150102860407122_610212121_6125535_2026428_n.jpghttp://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/167710_10150101899172122_610212121_6111380_6303833_n.jpghttp://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/180392_10150102860527122_610212121_6125540_4492787_n.jpghttp://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/167328_10150102860367122_610212121_6125534_4408253_n.jpg A photoshop of a couple of ideas of mods http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/168391_10150104005842122_610212121_6138557_4524166_n.jpg Needs a little bit of work doing to it, but I extremely happy with it so far and the insurance is shockingly half the amount I was paying for a 1996 almera 5 door 1.6. I've had a couple of these myself. I got alot of info from your threads, was inspired by both yours and Mykez threads A little update. The guy told me there was a problem with the ignition barrel but the car still starts etc. Travelled the 100miles to get the car to then be told it starts with a screw driver in the cap behind the barrel So fitted temp switches til i think of someting more subtle. Chavvy gear knob also needs replacing http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/183482_10150111523922122_610212121_6222930_6489952_n.jpg Car if off the road for a couple of weeks due to a cock up with the insurance so will be able to sort out the 2 jobs that need doing. Replace the rear bushes and sort out the wobbly gear stick
sidrick
When funds allow you should get an E46 m-tec leather/alloy gear knob. Excellent item. Do some googling on the sloppy shift. The parts needed to sort it are cheap, but it's a bit of a mission to change them unless you have a ramp. I think you have to drop the exhaust and propshaft, but can't rememeber exactly. Georgio
Class!!!Nice car.Fix the barrel issue as you are planning to and replace this awfull gear knob.It doesn't suit the car.Very nice.I like the color too.And a quick question. What is the gauge at the bottom of the tacho? Is it turbo?Sorry for my ignorrance, never had a BMW. zetec2k6
Cheers Georgio. The gauge show the miles per gallon used when driving. Good for keeping an eye on petrol, but I end up looking at that more than thespeedo lol. The E46 looks nice Sidrick, might just be the one to replace the one I have now :thumbsup
mykez69
you want a z3 quick shifter kit, that gets rid of the sloppy gear change. apparently.
zetec2k6
I read up on the z3 gear stick. Its slightly different cos the stick is straight whereas mine has a bend in it. There's some really good guides on here http://www.bimmerdiy.com/dir/e36
Georgio
Thanx a lot for the explanation What you saying is true,at the end you keep watching consumption!Just forget it,we can't drive like that...lol
ScORTED
i used to call it the funmeter on my 328... it used to spend a lot of time on the fun side and still manage good mpg for a big heavy large engined car... miss it
sidrick
http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticl...ft_Bushings.htm I found this in my favourites earlier. This is what you need to do.
zetec2k6
Cheers for that bit of info Sidrick , will defo be on the to do asap list Bought a pair of rear trailing arm bushes and when I was in the process of taking the wheels off, I found out the bearings had gone on the passenger side. Not the easiest jobs, but I'm gonna have a go at it myself rather than payout a small fortune for a garage to do it. Well, thats when I eventually find the locking wheel nut key! The rear wheel bearings on BMWs are a nightmare. I wouldn't attempt one without a ramp.
zetec2k6
Just a little update. The rear bushes have now been replaced. Wasn't as bad as expected. Also the rear bearings came out easily because the previous owner used grease to put them in 3-4 taps from the back with a small hammer and they were out! lol. Adjusted the bush housing very slightly so the rear sits a tad lower, but now the rear looks higher (the skirts look lower at the front though ) Also painted the rear hubs silver. Not happy with how bright they are so will be painted black soon. http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/197157_10150129397752122_610212121_6378949_7329423_n.jpg So far no one has agreed with me on this one. I'm thinking of painting the wheels black, like this.... (different wheels in pic)http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/197434_10150129461782122_610212121_6379395_8039342_n.jpg Next mod is replace broken front indicators with clears and to give the interior a good valet, it's been used as a big tool box lately Edited March 16, 2011 by zetec2k6
