escortsiman
My car has just basically died on me on my way home... I was at a round about and as I let the clutch out to pull off the car made a klunk and I stalled..... It started again fine but was revving strangely, as I went to put it in first gear I hear this terrible grinding / grating type sound and the car is very jumpy to pull off.... anyway.... I come to a zebra crossing, the car is in N, I go to put it in first but it wont go in, I pump the clutch and it wont go in, there is a que behind me so basically I shove it in with brute force and crawl home in first gear as it wont select any other gear at all... Does this sound like clutch or gearbox to you guys? My box has been a bit notch for a while, and today it made some horrible grinding sounds when changing, especially into reverse or third... My suspension bushes and engine mount/s are also gone so this is looking like an un-economical repair, :-( I'm looking at a Citroen ZX 1.9TD tomorrow, (I was waiting for my car to die any week soon!), and I intend to keep that for a year and then hopefully get an rs2k. father_ged
yea sounds like the clutch m8. has it been slipping at all?
RobMk6
whats the pedal feel like? as i would say its major clutch drag, especially if it wont go into reverse. with the engine running, press the clutch and slowly go through the motion of puttin it into reverse if you get a grinding noise, stop!, then do the same VERY slowly and you will get a very light noise as the 2 gears touch, (BUT BE VERY GENTLE) if the 2 sounds are the same then u clutch is dragging, which really means its not releasing when you press the pedal. take the clutch cable off and if you can fit a few washers to effectively pull it tighter and refit, then try the same, if its any better remove the washers and adjust the pedal accordingly until its driveable, then get to a garage to fit a new clutch, shudn cost more that £200 all in
escortsiman
The clutch has been fine, no slipping, not even 'high up'.... But erm, it sounded pretty terminal! I fogot to mention there was a strange smell as well.... I guess that would indicate clutch? I don't ride the clutch, slip it or hold the car on the clutch much / at all.... so its a big annoying if it is the clutch!
RobMk6
clutches go, they are consumables jus get it changed, is not a big deal, neither is a g'box, if your worried the box has been damaged too, you can get one from a breakers for much less than a ton, i can get mine for about £40 for good std ones
escortsiman
I know it is a standard item.... It's just that my car cost me £1500 a year and a bit ago, I've spent 800 on replacing parts... Brake discs & pads, exhausts (x2), suspension parts, cam belt, MAF(x3!)... etc etc (loads more).... and yet hardly a week goes by when it doesn't develope a new fault or problem of some kind..... Perhaps I just have a bad one? I don't know... All I know is all the parts / problems I had fixed a few months after I first bought it (IE: suspension) are now needing replacing again for no apparent reason... My family has had plenty of bangers in the past, none of them have ever had to have this much £££ invested in them and they were all more reliable! I don't drive hard either & it only has 91k Im gonna get a run around then save up for an rs2k or a fast mondeo.... I will break this for spares or sell it to someone very very cheap and they can sort it out.....

theresa
It sounds like the clutch. Will more than likely be the release bearing, or also known as the thrust bearing. If you get a new clutch fitted, the release bearing is part of the kit, so once you get a clutch kit and get it fitted, all will be well
