dan_m2k
Hi all, I've had a search around the boards and can't find a definate answer, so hopefully someone will have a clue where I do not We'v just bought an N reg Escort 55D van in primer grey (it's lovely! lol) the issue is that it's difficult to get into gear, and the biting point on the clutch is very severe, i.e. it suddenly bites and you're off, if you can get gear, that is. Getting into reverse is easy ish, and getting into second once the van's rolling is possible. First is only possible with the engine off. The clutch seems strong as the AA man managed to get it up onto his low loader at a right gradient (you know how they tip at an angle off the back of the lorry). Any ideas on what the cause might be? The previous owner mentioned an issue with the selector pin?! Though he doesn't claim to be an expert. Would really appreciate anything we can check easy enough, or whether we're gonna have to go for a new clutch Other than that, it's a diamond of a motor - it's got a shiny new 12months ticket on it and the body's great. Thanks, Dan.

charlie74
dunno m8,, IF its the pressure plate then i would guess its the same as changing a clutch,
jameswilco
i would say it was the clutch myself, not 100% but thats were i would start. ive done a few cars with the same symptoms and a new clutch sorted it, plus my van has a slightly warped clutch plate and i have to push the clutch right down to select first. and it doesnt help my release bearing is going aswell lol
marty1979
Where does the clutch bite? If it's right at the bottom then chances are you need to adjust the pedal. There should be an allen bolt at the top of the clutch pedal, screwing and unscrewing the bolt will move the hight of the pedal up or down and will change the position of the biting point. It's low down. You have to bury the thing in the floorboards to get anything and then it's not long till it's biting and it bites verrrry suddenly! marty1979
Adjust the pedal and it should be fine, I had exactly the same thing on mine when I bought it. The previous owner thought the gearbox was buggered, one simple adjustment and it was good to go.
