tomm Posted April 13, 2009 Share Posted April 13, 2009 Hello, I am going to have a look at a GTi tommorow, Its a 1998 3dr model in blue. Its a bit mankey but seems to be good enough to use as a run about. What i would like to know is, what should i have a eye out for? I now every model and make suffers from diffrent prolems and i am not a escort man so I was hoping that some one on here who is a escort man (or lady) could tell me w hat to be looking out for. What are the usual problem areas? What problem areas are a simple fix and what areas are a complete pain in the arse to fix? What is the GTi's downfall? From what i have seen so far he paint work is shot! I am not bothered about this, i am more concered about function over fashon. I will look over the car as i normaly would, cheack the oil and insider the rocker, all the arches and underneath, boot floor ect but is there anything which the GTi's suffer from which isnt usual? Apnea Posted April 13, 2009 Share Posted April 13, 2009 Check the idle is fine, service history, is its got high milege then see if its had a cambelt change. With it being a "98 car i wouldnt have thought the rust would have traveled that far! but i will have me a good old look and poke! With the idle, should i be checking its sat at a resonable/constanly steady reading? I will ask for history and there should be some thing stamped in the engine by to show the last belt change should there not?
