Phill
Part way through colour coding my door handles, done the sanding, priming and spraying. However, after 5 coats of Ford Petrol Blue paint from Halfords, the handles are a fair bit lighter than the rest of my car. I'm unsure as to whether I should keep adding more coats, or if the laquer will make them look darker.Any ideas? Also, I accidently sprayed my parents' drive blue as I didn't put enough newspaper down. Anyone know how to get it off? It's on tarmac, and I have two weeks until they return from holiday... marcus
i have just got my colour matching, i had the same problem with the colour not matching. all you have to do is laquer it and then when its fry use sanding compound. hope this helps mate oh yes, i had a red drive at the end, just use a jet wash Marcus Edited August 31, 2003 by marcus
Phill
I'm guessing sanding compund is the same as rubbing compound? Does that affect the colour then?

Phill
It's just occurred to me that the colour undercoat could make a difference. I used the plastic primer from Halfords, which is a blue/grey colour.Could this affect it?
marcus
i used grey, red and yellow primer and this made no difference at all

Phill
It's not white, but it's pretty light.Reckon I'll try laquering it and see how it looks, if not, it's out with the paint stripper.
gecko
I bought a second hand handle to practice on first as I am also doing my handles, first attept I did not sand the grain off the handle, so removed all paint and did this, now looks great. What I am going to do now to save time is too buy another 3 handles, since they are only £3 a piece, I think this is easier then spraying handles in situation and it will mean I do not have to rush job. I tend to do my painting in our large garden shed, ex motorcycle home as we have pratts for neighbours who sit outside watching people, plus of course they are p**sed off with me for buying a silver ford escort same reg as they have lol. Mind I think now they can see there is quite some difference between my Escort and there Escort.

Phill
Think I've sorted it now, just had to put 8 coats of paint on! Laquered them tonight, now waiting for them to dry before I put them on the car.Btw, I understand one should let them dry for a week and then use rubbing compound on them. Is it wise to leave them off the car during this time, or can I safely put them on tomorrow and have no problems using the rubbing compound while they're on the car? marcus
i left mine for a day and a half but when i fitted a handle, it keft a finger print in the laquer so just be careful where you press on, it will probably be better if you left it a few days Marcus
