Hi guys just put a set of ford 15" escort alloys (no spacer rings) got the nuts all tight and everything , drove 20 miles and they were fine and now theres a clicking/soft thump noise coming from the rear,

Any ideas tyres dont seem to have lost any pressure although one does has less tread then the other

any ideas? cheers guys

Sometimes get a clicking myself, but it usually goes away. A thump sounds more worrying

1. If the alloys were used, is it possible one's distorted?

2. Have u checked for small stones in the tread?

3.If the tyres are new, have they still got the stickers on?

4.Are there any bulges or cuts sidewall damage on sidewalls (inboard and outer faces)

Yup, they have to be ford specific if you've got ford alloys - they have a conical washer that seats the wheel properly.

Suprised no-one else has yet stressed this though - you shouldn't be driving with steelie nuts on alloy wheels, you are liable to kill yourself or someone else mate. Plenty of people on this and other forums have made this mistake and - perhaps luckily - have just had a wheel come off over the nuts at slow speeds, wrecking only the hub, wing, sills etc etc. If it happened at 70+, you can probably guess the outcome.

Might well find you can't get them in Halfords - neither of my local stores sell nuts, only the locking variety. Ebay, on here, Ford garages or else online shops like http://www.trackstore.co.uk/wnuts.html (SN40 or SN44 are the ones you want for Ford wheels) might be a better bet.

check to make sure when u remove the steelie nuts u havent damaged the inside, if you have tightened them that much then its more than likely that u have gouged the alloy inside as the nuts have a flat edge and not tapered,

check this becuase if you have its unlikely that the correct alloy nuts will sit flush with the wheel then causing u even more potential hazards as the nuts will seem tight but wont be as they will only be gripping on the gouged part
