awattam
Went to check my car over for it's MOT tomorrow and found some play in one of the rear wheel bearings. It spins smoothly and hasn't been making a noise but there's definitely play in it. It's a '96 with drums by the way I fitted the bearing early this year cos the old one was worn. It was fine when I fitted it. Took it all to bits and the bearing doesn't look worn (no pitting or marks on rollers). However no matter how tight I do up the hub nut there's still play in it. Do you think this is down to a worn bearing (even tho it looks fine) or a problem with the hub/drum or a problem with the stub axle? The system used doesn't seem to have any adjustment in it, it relies on everything being a perfect size to set the pressure on the bearing. I'm going to cancel my test tomorrow but I need to get it sorted before the current MOT runs out cos i need the car

I'm going to cancel my test tomorrow but I need to get it sorted before the current MOT runs out cos i need the car I know when I changed my rear bearing on my 98 escort gti the dude at the car parts place said it listed 2 different kits for my car - but no indication as which was the correct one - or why there was 2 even ? there was no adjustment method like there was in my mk4 escort (ie the tighter you tighten the tighter the bearing), but the bearing on the mk6 wasnt exaclty MEGA tight when I took it off. the haynes manual states : Torque Wrench Settings Hub/divershaft retaining nut :m20 -1.5 (23 spline driveshaft) ......... 220 Nm ....162 lbf ftm22 -1.5 (25 spline driveshaft) ......... 235 Nm ....173 lbf ft I never bothered with exact torque wrench settings - just tightened it up similar to what it was - I had no problems with play. are you sure you have bedded the new bearings in fully ? and that they are the right bearings to start with - is there any play if you slide the bearing onto the driveshaft indipenant of the hub - to see how loose it is? Andy_GTi
i always do the hub nuts up stupid tight, but your right they are a pain to get rid of the play, i tried shimming mine but ended up putting new bearings in...........again !!! awattam
So do you think it's just cos the bearings are knackered? I'm pretty sure they're the correct ones as they fitted fine and have only done about 3000 miles since. It seems insane that there's no adjustment in them, the amount of play seems to rely solely on the manufacturer of the bearings, drum and stub axle getting things EXACTLY right. Given the quality of some pattern parts this seems unlikely. I'll try a new bearing and see if that sorts it out, I really can't be doing with much messing about cos the car will run out of test soon and i need it. rs_daz
Did you tap out the bearing shells out of the hub aswell? or did u just fit new bearings in with the old shells still in?
awattam
Yeah, i changed the whole bearing, and i'm sure it was fine when fitted. Gonna go and get a new bearing today and try that, if not then I guess the problem is in the drum/hub or the stub axle.
Madmax
I had a problem with my old escort and what had happend was i didnt change the bearing for ages and it actually had worn away the hub so when the new bearing whent in thers was loads of play. So ended up having to buy a new hub which is what u may have to do.
awattam
I don't think the hub is the problem, it's quite old but the bearing seem to fit fine and there's no wear that I can see. Was your hub obviously knackered or could you only tell because there was play in it even with a new bearing?
Madmax
There where scoring marks where you could see the bearing had been picking up on the hub, but it was so badly damaged that when we replaced it the bearing just collapsed straight away. awattam
Mine's deffinitely not that bad, I'll change the bearing and see what happens.
sime73
maybe the ring wasnt seated properly and caused uneven wear ?
awattam
This sounds like a possibility actually, as there seems to be more play at some points than others. I'll swop the bearing over tomorrow morning and make sure it's all seated right in the hub. Thanks for everyones advice
