bongo
got to fit a track rod sometime this week and while reading the ford tis it tells you that the steering rack should be held in a vice to stop it twisting due to the excess forces of untighening and tightening o the new rod ( 80 nm ).obviously people have changed them without removing the rack,so any advice on doing this would be grateful thanks. nick_ov_uk
leave it bolted to the hub, mark on the rod where the rod end meet. screw it off this may be a pain unbolt it from the hub. add lots of copper grease to the rod screw the end on to the mark drive to tyre shop for tracking. Trig
Take the wheel off, crack off the track rod end lock nut, then mark it as Nick says, undo the nut on the track rod end holding it to the hub, and if you are fitting a new one, with a fresh bolt, hammer it up and out of the hub, or use a ball joint spliter if you have one. Then screw the new one on to the steering rod, nip up the lock nut, tighten the rod end into the hub and then head off to check the tracking. They dont take the steering rack off the the car, even after the rod end has been on for years. Edited July 30, 2008 by Trig

Trig
the steering rod has a ball joint at the steering rack end so it will spin round so the tracking can be set easily. unless the track rod end has been off recently it will be very, very difficult to hold the steering rod tight enough to undo the lock nut if you take it out of the hub first. The easiest way is to leave the rod end bolted into the hub until you have cracked off the lock nut, the once removed from the hub, the rod end should undo really easily
