There's an outstanding recall on that car for the steering spindle (which I got replaced recently one one of my 'rust buckets'(was that the term you used?)). BMW will carry out the work free of charge.

You ring up the dealer and say you believe there's a recall active on your car. They'll check the system and see the recall, get the part ordered and call you when it arrives to book it in for the work
