Hey Escort aficionados

Recently been doing a few jobs to the Finesse to get it back on the road (all welding tbh). Car is 1998 TD Estate

However since coming off the road last July the central locking is now on the fritz. You put the key in the lock and turn to unlock and it relocks immediately. If you time it right you can get the door open, by opening the handle quickly wherby the central locking will go through the unlock lock cycle until you A) shut the door, locking you inside or B) let it cycle away until something burns out.

I have unplugged the drivers door motor loom at the A pillar and it now appears that the other 3 door motors work ok from the N/S/F. Thats the Master in the N/S/F door and the two slaves in the rear. However, reversing the wiring leaves no working CL.

I would normally just say balls to it and unplug the multiplugs behind the doorcard and do without the CL. However the car has a aftermarket alarm that operated the CL, so it would be nice to have it working.

Any ideas, help or advice welcome. Apart from scrap it that is!

Oh yeah, as this is the Finesse Endura TD model without deadlocks or alarm it does not have a Central Locking Module in the drivers footwell. Does have the engine ECU in the passengers though. Dont know about additional relays, phoned the local Ford dealer and they had no idea, wanted to sell me a Focus or whatever instead.

Thanks.

this was quite a common fault on mk5 escorts and was normaly one of the mechanisms not opening fully .look at the other door handles in the car you will prob find one isn't functioning like the others just need to remove door card and oil the mechanism hope this helps :thumb:

Many thanks for the input guys. Followed your instructions but it was still the same. Took the motors out, stripped, cleaned and reassembled and the bloody problem was still there, cycling away :vangry:

Seats out, Console out & Carpet and it was time to get busy with the electrical testing gear. Point to point continuity test was done on the loom and connection plugs and a break in the Violet/White wire between the front doors was found.

So there it is, interneal break in the cable. Will fit a new section tomoz

Normal service can now resume.
