R-Reg Escort won't start...

Hi there!

I have been having an intermittent problem with my R-Reg Escort, where it would appear that after it's sat for a couple of days it won't bloody start, hell it won't even turn over. When you turn the key in the ignition, the lights come on, the radio blasts away and the fuel pump kicks in, then it does.... nothing. :censored:

Me and the old man originally thought it was the starter motor as when we bump started the car it worked fine, till I knocked it off, then it wouldn't come back to life again. So after some work checking all the wiring with a volt meter and ultimately replacing the starter motor, I turned the key and got... Nothing.

:nutter:

We tested both starter motors by connecting them to the battery to find that they work properly, every time no fault, we even half connected them in and shorted the earth back to the battery with a wrench.

I was flicking through the manual and saw that there was a "Ignition stop" relay, which I promptly pulled out and magically the car started, put it back in and the car started again.

All of this, was great until this morning when I came to go to work and got nothing again. Flicked the relay out, nothing, disconnected the battery and gave it five just in case it was that messed about with it for five minutes or so still nothing.

One thing I can say is that I did put the relay in whilst the electrics were still on and it clicked away merrily at me (like it knew I was about to beat the hell out of it :vangry: ) a sound that I can remember hearing whilst I was driving around on Monday in it.

Oh yeah my central locking hasn't been working since we redid the sills on it, every time you put a fuse in it just blows it so we suspect a short somewhere cause by us not protecting the wires properly.

Any help is appreciated!

dont know if you have checked it but there is a connection for the starter motor solenoid on the plastic bulk head panel near the break servo that can be a problem take it apart and give it a good clean had a very similar problem on mine and this solved it worth a try
