Help regarding gear box

I've never experience the thrust bearing working loose either but on the last Escort clutch kit I bought, the thrust bearing location tabs were plastic, so for that reason and also due to the awkward angle used when matting the gearbox to the engine, I believed one of tabs may of accidently snapped off, causing the thrust bearing to rattle against the clutch fork.

I'm sorry to make you feel uneasy in regard to driving your car.

On the occasions when my gearboxes failed, I was travelling at low speed, at most just under 30mph and on all occasions just setting off.

On the occasion I stripped the gearbox, the mainshaft bearing, the housing and the gears were smashed to pieces, so I guess at a much higher speed, although the damage will probably be far worse, there may be less of a risk of the gearbox locking up.

However, although for your sake I hope it is the thrust bearing and you will prove me wrong but the noise I can hear in the videos is the same noise my gearbox made before is went bang.

I've just remembered, before the noise appeared and during, there was a grinding like feeling, which I initially thought was a front wheel bearing but it didn't seem to match the wheel/road speed.

I've not replaced the wheel bearings and that grinding feeling is no longer apparent.

ive been to a local place called mid basically any one who gets caught driving with no tax , mot , insurance gets the cars took of them by police they are then stored at this place if not collected they get broken up for parts as there not allowed to sell the cars on so most are all in good working order , they have a van in he wanted £50 for the box but obviously id like to test it while its in before buying another does it make a difference its out of a van , im not sure if its a turbo or NA engine will it have differenent gear ratio?

I can only assume the gear ratios will be different, especially 1st and 2nd, probably the diff ratios too as the van is designed to carry a heavier load. Such ratio's may improve 0-60 time but I don't think the overall ratios will be that noticeable.

Quite a few years ago, a friend required a gearbox for his diesel Escort Van, we collected a gearbox from an accident damage breakers. I wasn't fitting it but during fitting, it was discovered it would not fit.

The gearbox bought was from a Escort diesel Estate and the flywheel and clutch assembly of the van was different. So back to salvage breakers, colllected flywheel n clutch, which was fitted and gearbox finally installed, then it was discovered the driveshafts were different or wouldn't fit in the gearbox ?

I don't know what happened to resolve the driveshaft issue but he did get his van back on the road.

What I know now, which I didn't then, I guess his van had a IB5 box and the gearbox from the salvage breakers was a MTX75, however, it's worth checking and double checking that any replacement parts are interchangeable between models.

I got my replacement gearbox off a forum member, I too was concerned about it fitting and correct gear ratio's etc.

To be on the safe, before fitting, I stripped the gearbox with the intention of replacing the bearings; once stripped, the bearing looked ok and felt good, so much so, I put them back it. The diff bearings had too much my play for my liking and the crown wheel ratio was different, so I swapped the diff with the one from my broken gearbox.

All been good since apart from a slight gearbox oil leak; for sake of £10, if you do strip down the gearbox, use a new gasket and input shaft oil seal.

I took the car around a few places even a ex gear box specialist he drove the car & said its quite surprised how well the car actually drives considering its age he said the gear box feels fine it selects & pulls nicely in every gear , he also said the chances that the noise still persists with every gear box suggests to him a unbalanced flywheel ?

Only you can decide or time will tell.

I hope I am wrong and it's not what I suggest but that is the very same rattling type noise I could hear from my car, which only stopped the moment the gearbox went bang.

I've never heard of or experience an unbalanced flywheel, so can't really comment on that, sorry.

When noise first appearred on my car, I instantly suspected a gearbox issue but friends and friends within the motor trade and two independant garages all diagnosed the noise as a thrust bearing issue.
