what's wrong with lowering springs

OK.

SOrry for the lateness of my reply.

Whats wrong with just lowering springs - ITS A BODGE.

If you hit a bump hard the spring can pop out as the shockabsorber is too long for it, you really do need shortened shock absorbers as well. Also due to the extra suspension travel you are now getting (due to smaller spring) your shockers will wear out a lot quicker. Handlign is slightly improved by this method, but not by a great deal when compared to a car with uprated shocks and springs.

Seriously mate save your money - it isnt worth the risk. Also it will work out a lot cheaper in the long run too ;)

Ooops no edit button but forgot to say, your ride quality will greatly suffer :(

With a decent set of shocks and springs you shouldn't notice a difference but springs alone is bad because you will be hitting the bump stops on every bump :(

disagree there, using springs is just another (albeit cheaper) way to lower your car. it might not last as long as with urated shocks but it aint a bodge.

what about comparing uprated shocks/springs to coilovers, there is a 200% ride quality increase (So ive heared) and they last longer, so does that mean uprated shocks and springs are a bodge ?(

not you dont, when you go over bumps when you are lowered surely if you were going over bumps at speed you would smack and destroy yer front bumper so yer stupid if you go over bumps fast anyway, even with normal springs/shocks i would have though that you would hit the bump stops near enough the same amount if you had lowered springs as the standard springs are soft whereas lowered ones are harder thus cancelling each other out so the only difference been the lowered springs give you a more harsher ride

So changing just the springs will damage the car? how quickly will it damage the dampers?

depends on how low you go, where you drive and how you drive etc, if you drive on motorways most of the time then they will last longer than if you do town driving cos theres more bumps, it sthe same with standard shocks though, they can last 20k or 120k before they become fecked

lowerin on springs only aint gonna do any harm at all, if ya go more than 40 mm then you need uprated shortened shocks or as others said one bad bump, pot hole or whatever and it could be partin company with the strut seat. I've had cars with full kits and just springs and can honesty say my cars with full kits have been no better than just springs. On my scort I used 40mm GMax springs and a ford strut brace and it handled really well. As for ride comfort if you like nice smooth bump free drivin then theres no point in lowerin anyway :thumb:

one thing to be sure of though in my experience is once lowered it chew through the ol lower arms faster :thumb:

Ive got a Escort L 1993 1.4i in balloi blue, dont think you sold me it mate!

Bit of mixed answers there im thinking of lowering my scort 40mm so do i get shocks and springs or just springs?

Cheers

up to 40mm and you can keep your original shocks, they will have a shorter life but not too significant, if you go for 60mm then expect new standard shocks every 6 months or so :O
