Changing Rear Drum Brake Shoes

whats envolved mate? do you need to take all the piston and springs off?

 

I dismantled the lot cos I gave all the drums another coat of hammerite, but you don't need to take the whole lot apart really I don't think

 

guess it depends on the car tho and how fiddly it is

1. Remove the centre console (refer to Operation Number 43 814 0).

2. Release the handbrake lever.

3. Slacken the wheel nuts, raise the vehicle and remove the rear road wheel.

 

4. Slacken the handbrake cable.

1. Remove the locking pin.

2. Release the locking nut.

3. Slacken the adjuster sleeve.

 

5. Remove the hub and drum assembly.

 

6. Remove the hold down springs.

 

7. Disengage the shoes from the abutment bracket.

1. Lift the shoes from the abutment bracket.

2. Remove the lower pull‐off spring.

 

 

CAUTION:

 

Take care not to damage the wheel cylinder dust covers when disengaging the shoes.

 

 

8. Disengage the shoes from the wheel cylinder.

 

9. Hold the wheel cylinder pistons in place with an elastic band.

 

10. Disengage the trailing shoe from the strut support.

1. Remove the upper pull‐off spring.

2. Remove the strut support spring.

3. Disengage the trailing shoe from the strut support.

 

11. Detach the handbrake cable from the trailing shoe.

 

12. Detach the leading shoe from the strut support.

1. Remove the strut support spring.

2. Detension the adjusting pawl by rotating in a clockwise direction.

3. Rotate the adjusting pawl in an anticlockwise direction.

4. Twist and remove the leading shoe.

 

Install

 

13. Clean, check and apply back plate grease to the back plate and abutment bracket contact points.

14. Refit the components in reverse order.
