Im currently fitting a new n/s quarter to a five series bmw, they use to be spot welded and mig welded, but gone are those days. The new procedure for this is no welding what so ever its all panel bonded, punch riveted, riveted, templates are used in the joins along with panel bonding, them metal filler applied, ive actually.taken some pics but just thought would anyone like to see this new method of fitting body panels if so i will take pics of the whole procedure showing how its done.

Yes please Andy!

Sounds very interesting, I presume it's to prevent the eventual rust from welding ?

partly, although if it has been welded to be honest it should have a brushable zinc primer over any bare metal as any baremetal shoud before its welded, i'll give more of a description when i put the pics up as it will be easier to explain. And show the methods we have to follow from bmw.

is it a product that can be bought and used by joe public or is it a bmw product only?

will look forward to your reply.

the panel bonding, punch rivets, rivets, are all supplied by bmw which as you can imagine the prices are over the top if im honest.

Joe public can get hold of panel bonding there are other alternatives that are exactly the same by companys like teroson, as for punch rivets they probably are available bit its the gun they fit into that would,nt be cheap to buy.

The swage line on the qtr looks higher than the one on the door. Is this the case or does it just look that way due to the two different coloured panels?

BMW adhesive I've heard it all now :pancake:

no your right it does look higher but when i took it the door isnt actaully shut properly so this is probably why it looks like its not lined up properly.

Oh yes bmw adhesive snip at £140 per tube.

Interesting read, and your skill never ceases to impress me, keep up the good work :thumb:
thanks jc i know you like these type of topics :thumb:
