tezmanian devil
DO NOT FORCE IT!! i did that and snapped the key take the petrol cap right out, at the back of it there's a clip, pull this off and the lock barrel should slide out, then just give it load's of wd40, and get some motor bike chain loob on it as that'll last age's. dont the job on mine anyway... after spending 3 hour's trying to get the snapped off key bit out lol
StewLX
Mine does this all I do is press the fuel cap down with my other hand while I turn the key.. Might still spray some wd40 in though.

GazSi
i've had 2 escorts and this has never happoned, happoned on my mk4 fiesta tho, i'm using the key fromn my old silver scort for petrol cap and it opens it lol
ScORTED
on petrol 90s fords the caps get exposed to petrol vapour which breaks down the grease in them, take it apart clean it up and regrease with lithium or copper grease and it'll be fine. EssexMikeSi
Ive had this on nearly every mk6 ive owned. My current car, the key snapped without much warning really to, being a great design of key (not) the metal key part literally pulled itself out the plastic part of the key. Even though i have a new key now, i just end up using my red key, i literally take my red key out with me, fill up so it lasts me the week then take the key back home lol. Altho, i had sprayed wd40 into the keyhole of the cap and it works fine, im paranoid that i'd get stuck somewhere if i only took the one key and it got stuck in there. So,as said just spray wd40 into the key hole and it'll be fine for a while.

robexor
IF your worried about it snapping the key (and if you do your tollay fecked )and the wd40 didnt work, you can take the locking mech out of the lock, this does mean any escort/mondeo key will open and lock it but it still open and closes and normal. GazSi
how do you take the mech out
SteveB
how do you take the mech out I didn't think you could do this as it has a snap spring retaining system. You can take the back off by pushing it in - twist - and release. Mark it with a paint pen first though to make sure you put it back the same way. My fuel cap became difficult to get off and rattled around when it was on because the back was stiff to turn and didn't snap back out correctly. Taking the back off and greasing the o rings fixed it.
