CVH breather

Hi all, i'm new on here and could do with some advice please.

Firstly, for my sins I have a 1.4 CVH/PTE escort. I know most of you look down on these nasty little engines but it was cheap!!

Problem I have is this. I had to change the rocker box gasket but when i took it off there was black carbon like gunk baked to the inside of the rocker box. Any idea why? then I thought I'd better check the breather pipes, the one that goes to the engine just next to the oil filter was blocked solid with crap! I cleared that out but i'm not sure what it leads to in the engine. Should it be straight through to the sump or is there something else in between? I want to clear it out if possible but don't want to go poking about if i'm going to damage something!

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give

Cracking little engine... Just slow as balls and drinks fuel... :pancake:

As for your question... no idea... I forgot what my old 1.4i looked like under the bonnet other than shiit!

My old Mk3 choked up the same. As far as I recall it is just the sump breather with nothing behind it so you can just clean it with paraffin on a pipe cleaner or similar. Once you are done use engine flush to break down the black gunk and do an oil change and flush again after a couple of months as it is common for the gunk to block the oil strainer.

Cheers mate, that confirmed what I thought. Engine flushed and new oil & filter done.
