Paint

Evening all. I will be painting my Imp in the next upcoming weeks and wanted to fire some questions your way if you'd be so kind to answer them.

1. The only compressor i can get hold of is a 3HP 50 litre one, i'm using an LVLP gun will this be alright? I don't mind stopping and waiting a moment for the compressor to wind up again.

2. How long do i wait in between coats?

3. I've got 4 litres of paint on the way, do i just keep doing more coats until it's all gone?

4. How do i tell if the paint/hardener/thinner mixture viscosity is correct?

5. When i was helping prep a Mini roof for paint we used this cleaner that you put on a clean rag, wipe on and then wipe off again to get rid of grease etc before paint, what is this?

To the best of my knowledge:

1. The one i've been using in my thread is a 2.5 hp compressor. Once it gets to about 6-7 bar I begin spraying and it pretty much fills up exactly as much as im spraying, so on that, yours will be fine.

2. Dont spray to thick or it will run. Er, some people say to spray just as the paint is 'tacky' so another coat sticks properly. This relly depends on how thick you layer it on. Someone who sprays for a living on here may have a 'proper' answer! lol

3. Er not neccessarily. if you have 4l of paint, by the time its got hardener and thinners you'll have enough to do 2 full cars!

4. Er...pass

5. Panel wipe. Comes in a nice big tin. Get off ebay. Wipe over the panel once prepped and it will remove any rubbish on the surface like grease from your hands e.t.c. After this, wipe over with a tac cloth ( a sticky cloth) and that will remove any dust particles left over.

Now get that paint on boy :thumb:

Hope this helped, feel free to correct me if i left anything out.

Compressor should be fine for what your spraying.

Ideally and hvlp spraygun would be better something like a devilbiss gti and you will need the gauge that screws on the bottom of the spraygun to tell you what pressure your spraying at this should be set at 2 bar.

What type of paint are you using, is it 2k solid colour meaning doesn't require laquering.

Or is it solvent basecoat then overcoat with clear laquer

Best way to to tell if paint is dry between coats is to touch masking tape that has paint on it this will give an idea how dry it is, should normally be 10-15 mins between coats

Mixing ratio for paint is best done on a mixing stick, your paint should tell you the ratio ie 2:1 or 3:1 once mixed on a mixing stick it will be the correct viscosity

What you described to wipe the car over with is a panel/solvent wipe this will make sure the prep work is contamination free

Then you will need a tack rag/cloth these are a sticky cloth once you have panel wiped the car and used a blow gun to blow it off wipe it over gently with the tack rag this will remove any fine particles of dust from the panels giving you a cleaner paint job

Number of coats of paint will be determined by how the colour you have chosen cover some cover better than others, what you should aim for is the first coat should be a dry misty coat then two nice even coats.

Are you painting the car on a spraybooth or an workshop, if it's a workshop then a tip to keep the dust down is put water on the floor.

If you need any other help mate or advice just ask I'm a car sprayer If you need any tips.

It's a solid colour, Caribbean blue 154. My mate came into work today with some primer/hardener for me and also he came in with some clear, so if i'm using a solid colour i don't need to laquer it?

Well my car originally is Caribbean blue 154, it's just all gone rusty etc.

It will be done in my double garage.

Thanks mate, got another one already, the primer my mate came in with is a 1L tin and only a little bit has been used, i presume that is not enough primer to cover my car and it says "4:1" Is this normal for primer? Sounds like too much primer to me. Is it alright to use that primer with a different type primer (same colour) or can you not mix and match.

Thanks for all your help.

Oh, i didn't want to get a HVLP because i didn't think the compressor would handle it, i have a pressure regulator and water sedimenter for it.

Some solid colours do come in basecoat, easiest way to tell what your paint is have a look at the sticker by the name of your colour if it has 2k next to it then this will not require laquer.

Yes 2k primers Are mixed at 4:1 a litre of primer probably won't be enough to prime the whole car as you will need three nice even coats of primer, you should be able to use the other primer as most primers are pretty much the same

As you said your doin in your garage mate just wet the floor this will help keep the dust down.

Also you should really wear an air fed mask when dealing with iysocyanates.

Try the spraygun you've got then mate with the regulater on it should be ok.

Oh right cool, what happens if you put lacquer on it?

Okie doke i'll have to get some more then.

Will do :thumb: Guarentee i fall over.

Brill, thanks for your help.

I know but they're muchos dollar and i don't really have the budget for that otherwise i'd be paying someone to do it....I've got a respirator with twin filters so that will have to do.

You shouldn't need to put laquer over it mate, as it mite react with the other paint, best thing to do to find out if you really do want to laquer it is, if you have an old panel to test it on first spray your 2k solid colour once it's dry try applying laquer over it see what happens, but in all honesty you shouldn't really need to because you can get the same finish with 2k as you will with laquer even when it's flatted and polished.

Your rite airfed masks are mega bucks mine was £450, personally I wouldn't do it with out an Airfed mask, but it's upto you mate as long as it's well ventilated.

Forgot to say 4 ltrs of paint is more than enough you could prob do car inside and out with that, one thing I would say is save some of the paint just incase you ever need it then you'll know the colour will match...

No probs with the help mate glad to help, shame your not closer I'd of lent you my spare airfed and you could of tried a devilbiss gti see if it worked ok....

Fair enough, that is the reason i picked two pack, it may hospitalise me but, it certainly gives you a nice shine! :pancake: and i'm hoping for a first time try that it will come up alright.

Well worth the money for a full time sprayer though. It is quite well ventilated, whoever fitted the extension did a crap job as you can see outside from inside :pancake:

Good good.

That is a shame i'm not closer haha.

Off to buy some paint accessories now! Good old online shopping.

Make sure you get progress pics and stick them in the suym section.

But it's a Hillman Imp? The only relation to an Escort it has is the shoes and steering splines, even then it's a Mk1 Escort.

Don't worry about that, we want to see pics!

will make a nice change from all the BMW nonsense in there ;-)
