4.64:1 IB5 Final drive

DaweV6

Recommended Posts

My mate is selling his barely used crown and pinion due to upgrading to VERY expensive half-helix 5:1 and this is now surplus to requirements. Ideal upgrade for any track/rally car that's very hard to get hold of.

4.64:1 Final drive

what's the advantage of it?

Well, do you still have your original 1600 box ? In that case you most probably have a 3.82 final drive. (And way too long gears as well, different story)

With higher final drive ratio the car will have much more get up and go, because it will rev higher to achieve same speed in a same gear. So when you'll shift from 1st to 2nd, the acceleration will be better, car more responsive, will pull you out of a corner much easier, etc. Only thing that you sacrifice is top speed, but this can always be tuned by choosing longer 5th gear. With mix and match approach you can make the car feel completely different. Definitely much more sensible and effective then trying to squeeze every last horsepower out of a Zetec by bolting on every aftermarket modification.

Most escorts have 3.82:1, same as 1.7 Pumas, some estates have 4.27:1, same as 1.25/1.4 Fiesta/Puma/Focus and 1.6 Fiesta/Puma/Focus is 4.25:1.

So this 4.64 is by far the highest you can get hold of for sensible kind of money (everything else is £500+ territory) and it's a straight swap easy(-ish) modification.
