Wet Sand

Hello all, it's me again.

My car is very close to putting primer on, just need to get a couple more things (Propane gas bottle and panel wipe) then i can get on with it. My questions:

 

1. What grit sand paper should i use to wet sand the primer?

 

2. When wet sanding do i mix soap in so it cleans the surface as i go? (I've heard someone say it somewhere but i forget now).

 

3. Same as Q1 but for colour.

Using Wet sand paper, I've always used 1500 Gritt, and a little soap helps.

 

AndyB is probably best to answer your questions though!

Aye that's what i thought, but i'm sure AndyB told me to do it in three stages, but i had to delete my PM's and that one went with them :(

I used 1500, jug of water and just kept it all very wet. Primer came out smooth as a babies bum, I did the same with my colour.

Bloody hell PeeWee, you get points for that, i wouldn't have even attempted at repairing that :pancake:

Hugely helpful lads, oh and JC, i will become a member one day.

 

That was done in my shed mate with no prior experience except from advice & observation of others work.

Also using rattle cans.

when you have used the primer has there been any repairs underneath if so, then don't wet dry as the primer and the filler underneath absorbs the water which will cause a reaction in the paint, i only dry sand using a block and 1500 is used in the bodyshop to flat down new paint to polish back. to flat down primer something in the region 500-800 grit. what primer did you use??

Well Mr PeeWee, good effort! Did you polish it at all? I've had trouble polishing rattle canned items before?

 

See that's what i thought, the absorbing water part, but AndyB told me to wet sand. I am now confused XD

Cheers fella, i'll get some 500 and 800.

 

 

After wet sanding the paint I then moved to rubbing compound then polish then wax.

In terms of wet sanding the primer, mine had extensive repairs and I still wet sanded with no adverse effects.

Did you say your using 2k HS primer mate.

 

If so you could do it the way we do it at work, any repaired areas are blocked dry with P320, then orbital sanded with P500, but instead of orbital sanding wet flat it with P800 then P1000 not forgetting to guide each time before doing this.

 

Yes when your wet flatting it add some fairy liquid to the water, will act as a degreaser as it's a detergent.

 

When priming what gun set up you using mate, because ideally it should be a 1.6 set up.

wet flatting is the old school way of doing it, water will only he absorbed into the repair, if you have done something severely wrong, or if you flat through the primer to the filler, I can't see why you will have any problems as your only air drying the car, bodyshops wet flatted cars for years without any major problems, when I worked in a garage restoring cars everything was wet flatted we never suffered any problems and alot these cars were built to concours standard.

 

What sleeman is saying is the new way of doing it, the body shop I'm in everything is dry sanded, but we still occasionally wet flat aswell tho.

 

p1500 is only for polishing new paint meaning, new paint would be flatted with p1500 then P2000'or you could start with P2000 then p3000 which will make it easier to polish.

 

Typical example of how we flat and polish new paint is P1500,P2000 then finished with P3000 due to the quality of the cars were doin the finish has to be spot on, then we use the 3m polishing system.

I will probably only do the one guide coat as i have to move out end of August so it pretty well HAS to be done before we leave, unless we find a house with a garage big enough blah blah. It doesn't need to be concours, i just want it to look good, which is why i chose 2k, it delivers good results, it just might kill you in the process xD.

 

If you mean 1.6mm mines a 1.4mm i believe.
