Handbrake Cable

Morning all, i think this subject may have been covered in the past so apologies if being repeated but i had a brand new genuine Ford handbrake cable, shoes and cylinders fitted about a year ago and for a while now there seems to be quite a bit of travel in the handbrake. When i had it fitted it only needed 3-4 clicks and it was solid but needs double that and even then the car can still move when i put foot slightly on accelerator. When on an incline i need to pull it up more and i can sometimes hear a creaking noise. The other day i pulled it and it needed nearly 10 clicks and the way it was pointing was ridiculous. I know it can be adjusted by the nut underneath the cover by the handbrake on the inside but my Escort is a 97 P 1.6 with discs brakes on front and drums on rear. Is there only one handbrake cable on this model because i have seen some advertised and one is for the left and one for right. Any help once again much appreciated. Cheers

you have to slacken off the 10mm nut on the handbrake lever ,remove rear drums 4 bolts from behind clean check for ridge on drum and file off if not to bad (will need new drums if worn too much ) and adjust brakes manualy (check for slipping adjuster ) as self adjusting mechanism dosn't always work replace drums and adjust handbrake(worth while checking the threads off the nut as have known them to strip ) :thumb:

The self adjusters on ford brake drums are a bit crap

I've heard reversing up then braking hard will make the adjuster ratchet move but never managed it myself :))

Unwind the handbrake lever adjuster

Remove the drums

Strip down the brake shoes/ self adjuster etc

Wire brush up the adjuster mech, make sure it moves freely and clean the ratchet teeth

(Check your slave cylinder whilst apart)

Reassemble the shoes etc

Remove lip on drum if excessive

Flick the adjuster round until the drum slides snugly on

Replace hub nut or stub axle bolts

Tighten at lever end for desired operation

Check even aplication of braking at each click
