POSTIE
thanks mate thought thay should in that case does anyone know why thay might not work properly we fitted mk5 rs lights to my van and this system didn't work so we thought it might be because it was a van but just fitted a mk6 gti loom and the problem still exists

GTI loom will be the same as most MK6 escorts I assume so it will be setup for normal mk6 headlights which use H4 bulbs for main and dipped beam and not seperate lenses so how are the actual units wired into the loom now? Confirm that the dipped beam is indeed getting no power with a multimeter or similar when full beam is on then work your way back through the loom. It's almost like its supposed to be doing what it's doing and it's a setup/config fault rather than an electrical fault.

caldoofy
The cause is that the mk6 loom is setup for a single bulb system ie the light switches from dip to main as it uses the same lens. With the mk5 rs setup this is now not the case it is effectively 2 separate bulbs in 2 separate lenses. When I converted my mk6 to mk5 rs my 'get around' for this problem was to add a link wire from the rs main beam bulb to the main beam terminal on the 3 prong dip bulb so that when you hit the main beam all bulbs are illuminated and gives a much better view of the road the mk5 is wired in a completely different way as the dip beam should be on dimmly when your sidelights are which obviously it isn't with the mk6 hope that helps. Tis what I said earlier MK6 use H4 bulbs so only have the one plug. So as you say, when you go full beam it shuts off the dipped.
