EscortNreg
In an unfit state to make decisions, I was tricked into agreeing to sign up to The Great South Run to raise funds for my sons charity. Only problem being, I'm shockingly shite at running, at the gym I avoid the running machines like the plague. Can someone advise me or point me in the direction of some good training plans or tips? The only ones I can find online are training plans for already semi experienced runners.
Ahmotorsport
I don't do exercize, i really should, but i don't. However, i've found i can jog significantly longer with my head up rather than looking at the floor, whether it's the same for everyone or even if i'm right i don't know. PeeWee
Try running between lampposts, run to the first one, walk to the second and so on.Then up that to running to two lampposts walking one.See where I'm going with this?Don't attempt any running in standard trainers, invest in some light ones with some sort of absorption too, otherwise you will soon damage your knees. How far is the run?How long off is the run? Edited June 17, 2012 by PeeWee

Just to be clear, that's what my doctor does, not just for me. Edited June 17, 2012 by Ahmotorsport

I have a decent pair of Asic running shoes, I bought them when I first started going to the gyn with the full intention of starting to run. It's a 10 mile run on 28th October I'm 31 Not that fit, I go to the gym but mainly on bikes and weights. I'm seriously overweight, im 19 stone, I was 21 at the begining of the year but its been slowly going down.

PeeWee
Get yourself checked out & make sure your functioning ok before running hard.Long regular walks too will help.Don't forget to stretch before a run (all that stretching you see athletes doing isn't for show lol)Good work on the loss of weight already, running, jogging, walking will accelerate that massively & the weight will soon drop off trust me. DaweV6
Running is for border collies, people with OCD and getting away from lions/bears/metropolitan police. It's a pretty destructive exercise for your body if not done properly. I was forced to run a lot (long time ago) and key to not-dying for me was to learn to breathe. On top of everything PeeWee said - find your own pace and work out what suits you best - for me it was something like breathe in for 2 paces, breathe out for 3. Go swimming, hiking, biking, anything to build up your stamina. You're gonna need galore for 10 miles. Also - stop drinking. It will help.
