Sills on escort van

Guys after a but of advice an maybe help with this.

 

My van is currently on ebay but if it doesnt sell im putting it back on the road.

Anyone have a guide to doing it please. Im looking to diy it.

shame you're in london, as i could have show you how to do it, or done it for you.

 

you need to start with a grinder and a decent quality grinding disc, and grind all the rust

back to see the size of the hole you have. you can buy skin sills to weld over the top or

to use to cut them up as they are near enough the right shape. it looks like it's only along

the bottom that is rusty, so it should be too bad.

So from looking at the pictures you think patches will be sufficient. I wont need new inner and outer sills??

will be easier to fit sills will be more scary for you but end result will be much better .from my experiance the bottom edge will probably be rusty and the inner sill to floor too, and you will be best to cut it off and replace with clean steel. a angled plate for inner sill and another for the sill to floor .if you patch it chances are you will be doing it again next mot as it will just rust next to each patch . its far better to learn to weld on nice clean steel

cool. I've found the outer sills on ebay. where can i source the inners from please, can only seem to find them for mk3s and 4s?

 

the ebay auction starts tonight. if it doesn't sell, which i sort of hope it doesn't now, i will start the rejuvenation. think ill go whole hog and get an mot fail rs2000 when the cosmetics are done. swap most of the stuff in.

you might be able to just make up/buy some L shaped angles to join the floor to the inner sill . im not sure but mk4 might be able to be used cant say ive done many vans but done a few cars .when you say inner sill do you mean the bit by the spring hanger as i remember welding a van there (not nice)or the inners that are in the car

I read something about inner sills and there seems to be another bit of metal behind the outer sill connecting to the floor. Think it's going to be a case of learning as I go with this. Striped. The carpet out and there is a little bit of rust in the corners probably connected to where the sills have gone. Doesn't look like its going to be too hard to do. I need to start a project thread I think.

dont want to dis hearten you but rust has a nasty habit of spreading fast once you touch it with a grinder.a small hole can grow into a major repair especially if some one has used welding in a tin

I'll get a picture tomorrow and post it up.

 

It has caused a crack in the metal but it only appears to be over a small area. Theres only one way to know though isnt there so I will cut it out and see what else has been effected.
