Mike-evans
Since I fitted my 2.0l last week Ive noticed the temp gauge climbs quite a bit, which does concern me....The fan does kick in and cool it down again. When i switch the heaters to hot, they will stay hot and not go cold, so Im certain theres no air in the system.. Is it normal for the gauge to climb up whilst driving? When I stop the car, coolant top pipe is firm (can squeeze it quite easy, not buging etc...) and when I remove the expansion cap I do get a light hiss as its releasing pressure.... Is it normal for the pipes to get firm when the engine is hot?Is it normal to get a hiss noise when opening the cap when engine is hot? Im thinking all the above is normal, just a little paranoid as my last engines HG give up..
Ahmotorsport
Yes it's normal. Things expand when hot and the system is pressurized to raise the boiling point of the coolant. If you're worried for head gasket, open the expansion bottle cap, run the car up and watch for bubbles.
Mike-evans
Still not convinced this cooling system is 100% ok.... When Im driving the temp gauge is climbing, then the fan will come on and bring it back down, surely the temp should stay constant when driving and not get hotter? When I just removed the coolant cap, I could hear the coolant moving around as if there was air in the system, and the expansion tank was filling with coolant from in the system - normal? No bubbles with cap off when engine is running....
scottybo
iv youve swapped from a 1.6 then the engine will run a bit warmer than normal if ur using the old coolant ayste. we sed to get it with the mk3 fiestas when swappin for 2 l. get a nice efficient slimline fan to keep it under control. blled the coolant system out if ur worried abour air
Mike-evans
All new coolant was used when I done engine change last week. Also I went from GTi 1.8 to 2.0l Ive just had the car idleing for 10 mins and just drove a few miles, heaters are boiling, all hoses are hot but all the radiator is stone cold.... Either rad is blocked, or thermostat?? New thermostat was fitted about 2-3months ago. Its been like this since I fitted new engine last week..... Whats your thoughts
Ahmotorsport
If little or no coolant is getting through the rad, the fan wouldn't keep the temperature under control.

Mike-evans
Coolant is all new. Prob try new thermostat. So is it an issue with waterpumps running wrong way on silvertops?
Mike-evans
Trying to think with a bit of logic here.... Pipes either side of the rad are hot, pipes either side of thermostat are hot, so if thermostat wasnt opening then surely one side of the rad would be hot or pipes one side of the thermostat would be hot and other side cool? Am thinking theres an air lock in the rad? How do you get an air lock out of rad?

How do you get an air lock out of rad?you need to run it from cold and feel if the top hose suddenly gets warmer, as can get warm as the heat transfers from the engine even if the stat is closed .mondy pumps run in the opposite direction as they are driven by the back of the drive belt but escort ones are driven by the grooved side of the belt, i think that the mondy one fouls the altenator bracket on a escort anyway so would have to be modified to fit
Mike-evans
I remember having an issue when fiting my new alternator belt onto the 2.0l, for some reason I had to use my alternator bracket off my GTi engine, cant remember the exact reason, but something was different??Any obvious way to check without ripping car apart? Just drove some more and rad is hot ontop and cold on bottom, Im sure a longer drive will get it all hot, Ill check now on way home.....
Mike-evans
Just drove to work (14 miles) and checked the rad and pipes, all pipes apart from the one at the bottom of the expansion tank are hot, rad is hot all over, heaters are boiling.... The return pipe at the bottom of the expansion tank is cold, does this sound like an air lock?
sidrick
Sounds like an airlock to me. Edited October 9, 2012 by sidrick
