demented
Think slight adjustment needed to the selector rod/linkage underneath gear lever. I had similar on my Escort 1.8 when I replaced thevgearbox but think it was 3rd gear and reverse not 5th. Its a while ago now but from underneath the car, I think I loosened the linkage clamp and from inside, moved gear lever to either left of right slightly, which caused the linkage rod to rotate. It can all be done from underneath. If that doesn't cure the problem, it could be an issue with the selector shaft retaining pin which holds the shaft in the selected gear. I believe this can be replaced without stripping the gearbox, there are two shaft retaining pin bolted into gearbox housing. In the following link, one can be seen partially removed, shown in 12th photo. http://www.projectpuma.com/viewtopic.php?t=2519

Escort Si-130
Get it up on axle stands, and adjust the selector. I did this with the engine on to check the gearing. But was very careful whilst it was on stands and wheels were not touching the ground. I went through the gears as though I was driving. It was then easy to make any adjustments by switching the engine off after, then loosening the lever clamp and then tightening it to get the optimal gear change.
