Trackday MK5 to MK5b RS2000

Hi you may have seen this on other forums but though i would post it up here anyway

Hi everyone thought i post one of my projects.... it started over a year ago with a idea to buy a cheap Escort just as a bit of trackday fun while i did some bits and bobs do my Evo VII RS Sprint which i use for the same task

It started like this being towed home by the Evo one late wet night on 20/06/2011...

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/new2028_zps7a477df2.jpg

So first job was to get her stripped out, set of MK5 RS2000 wheels can get the Koni's off and set to stiff and of course full service/checkover

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/Johnn8656.jpg

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/Johnn8655.jpg

Now i was really for my first tracktrack (well almost as some crashed into the front of it in the car park and didnt leave a note) so off to ebay to find a new front bumper....

I was really happy with my day @ Bedford autodrome but a few things needed some work...

1. The gearshift throw was like a type 9 so a qickshift unit was fitted

2. Brakes were uprated to 300mm ST220/ST170 set-up with 17" OZ wheels

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/300mmbrakes609.jpg

So a few more trackdays on i still wasnt happy with the body roll entering the tight bends so a set of Avo coilovers went on...

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/coilovers002_zpsbb9a0231.jpg

Then back onto the brakes again another few outings later, as i got used to the FWD and a Escort again on track i found i was cooking the brakes early on in the day even with track pads/discs so i fitted the FRS set-up first with Brembo pads then EBC Orange stuff, with this the braking was unreal but the nose dive was a problem and as i dont use ABS sometimes would lock-up the fronts with isnt good

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/brakes001_zpsc25fe4f1.jpg

Note the FRS Disc size to the RS2000 standard disc

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/now042_zps0ed645f4.jpg

The other problem i found is that this set-up is just so heavy and the car just didnt feel the same... the change from left to right now seemed like a real effort, the steering was heavy and the car alway felt front heavy.

So anyway i did one more trackday before i put it away over this xmas for a bit more work and to get the bodywork sorted

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/PR_120929_CMSVBA_0217.jpg

But as with all good plans i found a problem... after stripping down she was as rotten as f**k

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/poorescort009_zpsceeae096.jpg

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/rust001_zps11829c8c.jpg

Of course i knew there was bodywork etc that needed doing when i brought it but it was a bit more than i wanted so i thought about my next step and as i really loved tracking the Escort and not much done to the Evo i thought a reshell was the only thing to do... let the strip down start

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/poorescort002_zps6a0c02bc.jpg

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/poorescort005_zps52ad7044.jpg

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/poorescort008_zps2247ee5f.jpg

For a change luck was with me i found a just about rust free 1.3 Base MK5a rolling shell on ebay for £200 (no one else even bid) with coilovers etc and sold all bits from it for more than i paid

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/shell016.jpg

Now its just a case of swapping everthing over and starting again

Will keep the thread updated thanks for taking the time to look :nerrnerr:/>/>/>/>

Shell stripped and ready for its last trip :unsure:/>

Good and bad today lot of bits came, National sport 283mm discs from a 2wd cosworth, DS3000 pads and the clutch kit but the RS shell took its last trip.....

Not much done lately to cold but new wheels here at last there 7x15 Compomotive motor sport CXR's so can use a HiSpec race brake kit using a floating 300mm by 28mm disc and the R126-6 6pot calpier as the 2wd Cosworth set-up dont fit.

Brakes here at last been messed about a bit been 6 weeks or so and for £1200 would think customer service would be better but the kit is great, 300x28mm discs with 6 pot caliper under 15's with people say cant be done... answer is motorsport wheels :nerrnerr:/>

Few trackday pics from June 1st @ Bedford auto drome's "SEN" circuit. All went fine but gonna get some stronger springs from AVO. Should be there again July 20th just trying to get the car set-up right as would like to get it entered for the "MSV trackday trophy" race series next year

Nice brakes! Let me know how you get on with them around track! Are they quite lightweight in general and £1200 ouch! Were the four pots not an option or did you want the 6 pots?

The brakes are unreal mate prob twice as good as the FRS Brembo's thats for sure had to be careful with them as dont use ABS. Yes also very light you can hold the caliper on your finger and hardly even feel it, the FRS lot was 26.5kg and didnt check the Hispec's will do when take them off at some point! There are countless options on there kits, road, race, single, 2 piece or floating discs and 4/6 pot calipers even different material pistons. I went for the full race kit as had tried also all the Ford kits (didnt list them all in thread) and the over all plan is to circuit race it so made sense really.

Thanks will do not much more planned for mods till over winter for FIA cage etc just going to up springs rates for now and get few more trackdays under belt! It is a really tidy car not had and welding what so ever and not even any rot on the arches or sills ect so makes a really good base to start with really happy with it.

Nice too see you actually done something with this one John! When I last saw it it was a rust bucket! (Sean's mate) I hope too be back in one soon after I can shift the bm!

Had enought of the 1 series mate lol what Escort you looking for

Yeah had plenty enough of them, time too get back in something old & troublesome! Boring new cars! Not sure yet, ideally want a mk5 rs2k, but got a speeding offence going through depending on how well that goes will depend on what I get for insurance! But hope too be in one by end of the year!
