Q: Fitting bucket seats

Hi all,

Basically I will be getting bucket seats soon, and I want to fit the seats to the original mounting/subframe, as I refuse to pay 100 pounds for ONE sliding/tilting subframe from Cobra/Sparco/etc.

Now I understand that it might be possible to mount the bucket seats on the original subframes by drilling a few holes and possible some adaption bars, though I have two concerns.

1. The handles for sliding/tilting seem to be on the seats, not the mounting, so is there any way I can use this mechanism?

2. The seatbelt tensioners are linked to the airbag. Would it be a problem if I fit bucket seats? I.e. do I HAVE to disable the airbag?

By the way, mine is a Mk6.

Please enlighten me.

Many thanks.

Mate, trust me when i say get the escort mk6 ones, it will make your life soooo much easier! Sime had loads of trouble getting the universal ones to fit right.

Hi,

Sorry I mean mounting on the ORIGINAL seat subframe, not an universal one...

So do you guys have to disable airbags to put on bucket seats?

Because I read somewhere that the seats are linked to the seatbelt tensioners, which are linked to the airbags.

Thanks.

I know you meant original ones, but we're saying that universal subframes (that are made for the bucket seats) are an arse to fit, never mind the original ones!! They;ll be solid to do imo. My escort mk6 ones were 55quid each from corbeau.

The airbag is not disabled (well it is now cos ive got a new steering wheel), but my airbag light does flash (gonna take bulb out), cos when you take the holster out, you have to disconnect the wire.

If you are fitting bucket seats, are you fitting harnesses? would be safer and you wouldnt really need an airbag cos you aint gonna move far!

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I am not going to fit harnesses for now, because I do occasionally need to use the back seats (weekly Tesco run...). Until I have the money to buy my fourth car anyway.

I asked using the original subframes because I read on the Haynes MaxPower guide and some other websites that a few people have fitted bucket seats to the original subframes and it sounded easy. Plus I can slide the seats forward too, so that I have (some sort of) access to the back seats.

So are the 55 pounds subframes slide/tilt capable? And they just bolt straight to the floor, right?

Regarding the airbags, does that mean the lights WILL come on if I remove to original seats and put bucket seats in, but the airbags still function correctly? Even if I keep my seatbelt tensioners?

Many thanks.

if you keep the tenshioners youll be fine, there the only thing by the seats that it connects to, the subframe will be just like the ford one in the way of it will slide backwards and forwards, i dont know of anyone who make titling ones tho thats usually a option on the seat.
