ryanrs
my 1st escort (and 1st car) MK 5 ... was a 1.4 S K-reg.. my pride and joy.. i was an apprentice mechanic at the time, so we used it to teach me.. so , i pulled out the 1.4 CVH, and reconditioned a 1.6 CVH. polished ports, skimmed it, recondioned an XR2 carb and fitted, fitted new clutch,etc.. it also had a geniune cossie bonnet on it...which i loved. started fitting cossie kit, made me own back bumper that looked rather nice, modifyed a 4" piper exaust off an astra as the only company that make them for mk5 1.4 is peco.. tinted all the windows, real good job too.. it was lush. then i decided to stop workin for the garage as money was pants.. then i purchased a high lift kent cam , confident i can do this, from reconing the engine myself, i fitted it, worked perrrfect.. Then .... i saw sometin in my local ford spares shop that caught my eye.... and i wish i never ever saw it.. it was 2x Webber DCNF 40 carbs on CVH inlet, £120...hum... i RAN to the bank, and fitted them straight on.. made me own choke using a 7speed mountain bike gear shifter (lol) and fitted a fuel pump.. Needed serious tuning, and went like stink at the rite revs, sounded GOREGOUS! untill this happend...... I FORGOT TO FIT THE DARNED FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. it over filled the carbs, spiling petrol everywhere, then the carbs backfired , and before i new it, the car is up in flames! and what makes it worse, it was kept on private land, so i need no ins etc. So, i lost everythin! ryanrs
Lol, it was quite a while ago now so iv got over it, got a GTi p-reg now, and must say, i prefer it, its much more lux than the old Mk5. funny thing was, i was standing next to me mum when the fire brigade was putting it out, and me mum said to me infront of the chief fireman 'I hope you have learnt a lesson from all this!?' to wich i replied 'Yes, definatly use throttle bodies instead of carbs next time!' then i got looks of evil from me mum and the fireman pissed himself laughin! hehe!
