How To Bypass Pats & Swap Ecu's Etc, EEC-IV integr

I found this here: http://www.rs20004x4.com/test/index.php?showtopic=17746

This was no more than a theory this morning but after studying the ford wiring diagrams and ECU pinout data I decided to try it,

IMPORTANT

this will only work on cars that have a 60 pin EEC-IV ECU, with integral pats, if you are unsure if you have integral pats look up the back of the glovebox, if you can see a black module with a bunch of brown wires plugged into it you have external pats and this WILL NOT work, most internal pats cars were built from August 94 on. cars that have external pats have ECU's that are classed as non pats, as the PATS module controlled the earths from the ECU,

WHAT YOU NEED.

non pats ECU, from the same spec car as yours, ie; if you have a 95 1800 escort you will need a non-pats ECU from an 1800 escort built August 94. or if you want to fit an 1800 into a 1600 and only have the early ECU this is how to get round the PATS problem.

phillips screwdriver

small pick or screwdriver

10mm spanner or socket

the guts to attempt it, its not hard if you know your way round a wiring loom, but if you don't try to get help from someone that does.

THE METHOD

disconnect the battery,

remove the ECU from its bracket in the NS footwell, undo the 10mm bolt that holds the plug to the ECU and remove the plug, remove some of the tape wrapped around the loom to give you more space, you then need to locate the following pins in the ECU plug and use masking tape or similar and write the pin number on the corresponding wires, take your time, you don't want to get it wrong. the back of the ECU plug is marked 1 to 20 along the bottom row of pins and 41 to 60 along the top, it doesn't take a genius to work out that pins 21 to 40 go through the middle.

don't use this pic as a guide, it was taken after the pins were swapped, its just to give you an idea.

injector wires,

pin no 12 brown/red wire

pin no 15 brown/black

pin no 42 brown/yellow

pin no 54 brown/green

fuel pump wire

pin no 53 brown

octane adjust wire

pin no 29 brown/red

aircon wire, (needs doing even if you do not have aircon)

pin no 35 brown/green

starter inhibit relay earth wire

pin no 32, brown/white

pats wires,

pin no 39

pin no 22 both brown,

remove the long red centre piece in the ECU plug, it can be prised out with a pick or small screwdriver, locate the pins you need to remove, with the pick push the little clip away from the contact inside the plug and pull the wire out from the back of the plug,

it would be best to start with the 2 pats wires, no39 and 22, (wire 39, when earthed will light up the dash led, it can if needed be attatched to a vehicle immobiliser or switch so it works when the ignition is switched off) when removed wrap them both in tape and tape them to the loom, NOT touching each other, they are no longer needed but they occupy pin holes you need, then remove the aircon wire no 35, and temporarily tape it out of the way,

Start with the fuel pump wire no 53, remove it from the plug and refit it to pinhole no 22,

injector 1, pin no 15, remove and refit to pinhole no 51

injector 2, pin no 12, remove and refit to pinhole no 52

injector 3, pin no 54, remove and refit to pinhole no 39

injector 4, pin no 42, remove and refit to pinhole no 35

the octane adjust wire no 29 next, remove it and refit it to pin hole no 42 left empty by one of the injector wires,

remove the starter inhibit relay earth wire pin no 32, this needs to be connected to a suitable earth point, there is normally one next to the ECU on the inside of the A pillar, failure to do this will prevent the starter from working. it can if needed be connected to a kill switch or after market immobiliser as extra protection from theft etc.

then refit the aircon wire no 35 to pinhole no 54, another now empty injector pin.

refit the red piece to the ECU plug and refit the plug to the replacement non-PATS ECU.

re-connect the battery, and see if the car starts, if it does your a winner, if not you need to retrace everything you've done, this is where the tags you put on the wires at the start come in very useful,

I know this works, I've done it today to my own car and its running fine, if you get any probs don't hesitate to PM me and I'll help you out. thumbsup.gif
