ryanrs
i no its a ford escort forum, but i just hoping someone here can help me find out whats wrong with me dads 1997 Vauxhall Vectra GLS 1.8 .... basically on the way back from the beach today , the dash battery light decides to start flickering... so i fort, dodgy wire on the alternator maby.. but then as we drove furthur, as revs increased,it became more of bright constant red.. so i fort maby the belt could be nackered ? but when we hit 60 mph, the speedo and rev counter like switched off! went to zero, untill we dropped below 60,then it would all come back to life. and the lights for ABS, seat belts and Engine management kept coming on and every now and then going back off again ? :S the dash Radio digital display thingy was going dim the bright then dim etc etc aswell.. But there was no power losses or poping from the exaust, due to spark power starving... there seems to be a slight high pitch hissing noise (very quiet) coming from somewhere in the engine bay -maby the internals of the alternator? any ideas what it could be? as i would imagin this is an expensive one for the vauxhall diagnostics computer. thanx

ryanrs
i fort loose belt at 1st , but wouldnt you hear it slipping? we went out just now in it and broke down. battery went flat.. so no power to fuel pump etc. but strange thing is, the battery light is now NOT on! oh, there seems to be some kinda smoke venting out of the battery when the car is on. ?? anyways, we got a new batt now, and its running ok.. no battery lights or anything.. suppose time will tell if the alternator isnt working. foxdie
you can tell if the alternator is working. IF you put your lights on agsainst a wall or something and press the throttle, they should get brighter.
