Buying an engine from a breakers yard

Gonna start looking for a 2 litre engine tomorrow...any tips for making sure i end up with a good 'un?

What mileage is safe to go up to, bearing in mind it isn't likely to come with service history?

How much would a reconditioned engine be? Would it be worth it?

I do not plan on any further performance mods apart from induction/exhaust, but want a fairly reliable engine.

Thanks for any input!

Like said above unless they can prove it dont believe jack from a breakers yard unless they got paperwork etc to prove it. Mate of mine found that out the hard way with a gearbox which was supposadly good but decided to spit its guts out 2 days later.

If possible, see it running.

Otherwise - check the oil filter, if it's rusted to fcuk, leave it.

Check the oil in the sump, should be fairly clean.

Check water in the header tank, hopefully nice and clean.

Check under oil cap, once again, oil should be nice and clean.

That should be enough to ceritfy whether it's a good one.

Don't be put off by mileage :D My new build had 155k on it!! Giles stripped it down and the bottom end was still perfect. Crank hasn't needed a re-grind - awesome.

Nice one :)

I know there are no gurantees from a scrap yard, but its the only way i can afford to do this right now, so the above info will be a big help in finding a decent one. Cheers to everyone!
