Ok so set up a Server2008 R2 machine.

Created the domain & seems to be ok as I can use another XP machine to join this domain.

My problems start when I try to join the domain from Windows 7 or Vista.

Username & password comes up to join this domain so it see's it ok but wont join?

I can ping the domain fine from windows 7 so I know its there?

Any suggestions welcome. :thumb:

???

Both XP and Vista/7 come up with a box asking:

Username

Password

Nothing about domain. The domain on all 3 I enter first before it brings up the login box.

The message im getting is:

The following error occured attempting to join "kwikfix"

The network path was not found

path was not found.. that almost sounds firewall related. When pinging are you pinging the hostname?

Also. What AV software is the win7 boxes running. I have found issues similar to this if running mcafee

Indeed! I turned off firewalls tempory but still no joy, no antivirus on the server yet but all my clients use Microsoft security essentialls & I havnt tried turning those of as yet?

The XP machine is running the same AV as the rest & allows me to join no hastle?

Yes I can Ping the hostname.

Try Setting your DNS on the clients to the IP of the server, if that fails its proably AV, I know with macafee you need to trust the Range of IPs you are on but ive not got a clue about the MS AV you have Edited by scottg17

The AV I stated is incredibly good, so good I have switched from Avast, I cant seem to find a way to disable it though to test if its that?

make sure network discovery and file sharing are switched on from the vista and 7s???. apparently its vital that you use the IP of the DC as your primary DNS though.

Is the DC running DHCP? single or multi card setup?, maybe try redoing DHCP? but thats a bit far maybe?

Other than that Pass?

But normally this Error is DNS related, especially if the XP machines work ;)

From what I can tell DHCP is off, not a multi card setup either.

Ill fiddle with the DNS a bit see what happens?

DNS is defo worth a shot ;) :thumb:

Nope nothing so far, im playing with IPv4 should I do anything with IPv6?

I managed to disable my AV but still no joy?

IPv6 is set to obtain IP adress automaticaly

IPv6 dns is set to use ::1 with no alternate

The server now doesnt have internet access whatever I have changed?

I still have local access though.

Ok got it.

Setting the dns on the client to the ip of the server worked. Thanks Scotty.

Now me being me im curious to why th XP client set to auto joined the domain yet vista/7 need the dns set to the servers IP?

The server at work lets me join xp/vista/7 without the need to do this, in fact it only works if theyre set to auto on all IPv4 settings? Is it simply that at work im using smb2008 & here at home server2008?

I still have no internet access on the server though?
