demented
I bought a Transmech clutch kit from Europarts for my 98 Escort 1.8Si, not fitted yet. Since reading post on the web regarding quality and life expectancy, I'm not keen to? Has anyone had any experience of using a Transmech clutch? I'm being quoted close to £90/100 at trade rate for Valeo and LUK ?

ScORTED
also never heard of transmech, if you bought it new from a decent supplier then if its not up to scratch and it fails take it back

demented
I'd never of Transmech till I bought clutch either. Yes, it was bought new in a sealed box and only £45'ish. Are Europarts regarded as a reputable supplier? I've found a few posted on the web referring to other cars which have used Transmech clutches, with poor results, failing within weeks etc, such as this: http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showthread.php?t=347739 As for taking the clutch back should it fail, that's all very well but I don't fancy spending 5 hours fitting the clutch myself or paying £150 for a garage to fit it and it fails in 6 weeks. Not only will my car be off the road should it fail, it will probably require a tow home or to a garage, be another 5 hours or more removing and refiting the clutch or speding another £150 or more for a garage to rectify it? Yes, I may get a replacement or refund on the clutch kit but compare that to all the inconvenience, especially when recognised brands such as Valeo and LUK are only £50 more. I'd rather find out on an Escort forum if anyone else has experienced problems or issues with this brand of clutch (Transmech).
scottg17
TBH, id just steer clear of cheap rubbish... you pay for what you get. I bought an apparently uprated LUK clutch off ebay for £35 brand new. got clutch, looked as though it had been used (like small bits of rust around the torsion springs ect) friction surfaces were fine, had the proper LUK logo stamped. As soon as i fitted the clutch it had a noticeable vibration through the pedal. Needless to say 6k later its died.....I also bought a recon steering rack from ebay from ACS power steering, was fine for about 5-6 weeks then it fubered up also. You pay for what you get so beware Heres the picshttp://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs234.snc3/22152_1382179554941_1245529921_1126275_8275647_n.jpghttp://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs214.snc3/22152_1382179594942_1245529921_1126276_3976544_n.jpg Fitted a valeo from my local motor factors... was £90 and it never gave a spot of hassle... smooth ECT
demented
My sentiments exactly regards buying parts. Some parts from ebay you can get away with, its like buying from the scrappers, if the price is right to justify the risk, you can get away with. From my own experience of ebay, anything described as new, boxed, never used, tends to be cheap rubbish or damaged. My opinion, buying things off ebay without seeing item first, as has its day. However, with something like a clutch, its a different story, quality counts due to the cost involved should a garage fit it or time taken if I had to fit or refit it myself should it all go wrong, whether that be within 6 weeks or 6 months. Technically, under normally driving conditions and mileage, a clutch should last the life time of a car and should only ever require replacement once. My query is with Europarts as well as the Transmech clutch, I purchased the clutch over the counter, described as new and not reconditioned or relined. When I bought the clutch, I assumes a company such as Europarts wouldn't be selling rubbish, it only since I've read horror stories with photo's on the web that I have my concerns. bronze4door
i bought a cheap clutch for my escort and it lasted around 10k which were not the easiest on a clutch and it also did a full track day at oulton park and two track sessions at for fair trying to catch my friends sierra xr4x4 so it all depends on how you use it i now have an luk clutch that i paid £80 for, so far that has done 2 track days 3 sessions at ford fair, not sure on what milage it has covered but it still feels alright but the release bearing has a little noise coming from it but i am not going to change it till it dies completely
