jghs83
Hi guys, My estate currently has 75 van front shocks (bit stiffer and designed for heavier weights) & gmax -35mm springs. Theres nothing really wrong with the setup, couple of years old and were fitted new. Ive been offered to buy some near new weitec coilovers (i know there near new as i sold them) & part ex my shocks/springs. Is it worth while? I might go a bit lower, maybe to -45mm but other than that is there any other real benifit. I dont drive hard anymore, its track days are over, but do a lot of motorway cruising so high speed stability & comfort is what im after. Opinions? I had the wietec GTN coilovers on my old black escort which I sold last year, the weitecs are a budget unit, complete setup brand new was £450 when I purchased them. They have been fitted to the escort without issue for 4.5 years. Thats the good part. The bad part is that they are fah000king stiff, I would nail poly bushings in my lower arms every year, I was down 60mm to 65mm ish, they go all the way down to 75mm, they will not be the confort ride you are looking for but this was mostly noticable on side roads rather than the motorway. It is a stiff unit, I wont lie, they are v stable however. Should give you some more info to make your decision on.

The '75 springs i have now are stiff enough, driving over the rumble strips on the motorways is bad enough. 75mm !!! thats how low my van was then, just aswell that I raised them up now then I shall see how I get on with them then. You needed to lift it, youdve never got off the drive!

scottybo
i never go for coils on road cars, get a decent set of matched shocks and springs, coils are a shortcut to the chiropractor lol
Stu
You want stability, yet you want to ruin your geometry by lowering it loads and stiffen it up so you lose grip? If you want decent handling, bin the junk brands like gmax and weitec and buy some koni dampers and decent springs, either RS ones from Ford or if you must have aftermarket then H&R. The koni sport yellow and H&R spring package is a nice compromise on an Escort for a daily driver. For fast(er) road i'd go with the same springs but Bilstein dampers. scottybo
i thought weitec ones were quite good, please correct me if im wrong
Stu
Any coilover set under a grand isn't good. Any coilover which claims you only need one spring weight for any ride height is also not good.
