scottg17
You'll manage, If you cant get the main crank bolt out a wee tip, just stick in 5th gear, Get a mate to stand on the brake pedal and loosen it off
268
Tip worked the air box came up with a good tug.... right too the face! poor design really! Also there's a pic of the white crud in the oil still can'really tell in that pic but if you look close you can. It just basically looks like someones filled my engine up with hot chocolate rather than oil. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0446.jpg
scottybo
thats cause by the headgasket failing, its normally the coolant that gets churned up by the spinning engine in the oil mayonnaising i think is the technical term!
268
To Get all that white crap out my engine do I just use engine flush on it before I fill it with oil or is there another procedure?
268
Small update today :Got the car in the air Removed inner arch liner tehn removed the Inner arch cover ( caked in mud behind it), proceeded to remove the auxilary drive belt off + tensioner also removed all parts of the timing belt cover. Then set the engine to TDC. Pics. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0463.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0465.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0469.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0475.jpg Also How can I depressurize the fuel line, bearing in mind the cars unstartable so I can't do it the via the haynes method. cheers! the_big_man
if your doing a head gasket leave the fuel line attached to the manifold and use a bungie cord to hold the manifod to the bulkhead. that way all wiring can stay attached and no vacum pipes need to be removed or the fuel line de-pressurised Good luck with it though
268
Cheers big man, What about the injectors though to remove them from the head will mean it needs to be depresurized won't it? I was thinking about leaving the inlet manifold etc. attached to the head still. I thought that may make it easier. Any thoughts?
the_big_man
the injectors are bolted onto the plastic inlet manifold by approx 3 or 4 bolts. leave them in and remove the 10mm bolts holding the manifold to the head and the 13mm nuts on either end and then the manifold will come away from the complete in one piece. then its just a case of removing the exhaust manifold nuts, again, just leave that in place but pull away from head. once belt is removed and head bolts done the head will have enough room to come out leaving everything else in place
268
Cheers big man, access to those bolts looked a bit tricky when I looked at them earlier but I'll double check tomorrow!! But thaks for the tip it's gonna help alot what you suggested.
268
Hi all no real progress made today due to bad weather but my head gasket kit arrived just waiting on the timing locking tools now which should hopefully arrive tomorrow. I have 2 questions; The spark plugs below are the blackest spark plugs I've removed from a car and they're less than a year old. Haynes diagnoses this as an engine running rich or a "worn" engine (my head gaskets just gone). Any thoughts. What's the primary cause of headgaskets blowing, I know it's over-heating but mine wasn't over-heating. I know fatigue due to age is another common factor which I beleive is the case this time round, although how do I diagnose it as definatively breakdown due to age? I just don't want to change it and then it blow again if I haven't addresed the cause...... And how do I update my dam sub-title topic header thing........ Pics... http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0477.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0478.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0479.jpg Cheers again
the_big_man
Looks like you have a big gap on those plugs!. Most common problems for it to run rich would be possibly a worn out lambda sensor or a coolant sensor playing up. with regrads to the timing a zetec is the easiest engine to ever do a belt on all you need to do is align the 2nd cutout mark on the crank pulley with a mark on the sump and make sure that both flat edges on the backof the camshafts are aligned (anything to hold them in place will do,no special tool needed) and crack of the pulley bolts, set the tension and and re-tighten the pulleys and hey presto....job done with regrds to the head gasket failing it could just be from where it has not been maintained by previous owner, driving style i.e. short journeys, bounced off the rev-limiter etc etc etc, Many different reasons. Best thing to do as well will be to have the head skimmed whilkst doing the head gasket, will cost approx £30-£40 but will make sure it won't 'blow' when re-fitted. Also when putting the bolts back in make sure that all bolt holes in the block have no water/oil in them as this will affect the torque settings for the head bolts as bolt won't be as tight as it should be. Good luck with it fella
268
Thanks for the detailed response big man, you certainly do know your Zetec engines!! . The car's only got 45,000 on the clock and full service history, one old man owner from new. To be honest though I reckon the garage that did the work were ripping him off looking at some of the jobs done and also doing work for the sake of doing work to be honest. Well I've learnt something new FSH, low miles, serviced every year and one old man owner since new isn't always a good thing!!! The clutch slipping was forcing it to do high revs so that could of contributed. Also on occasions I do like to open the taps with it! So I could also be to blame. Time can only tell once I've got it back on the ground.
268
Again more baby steps today, disconnected the PAS pump and the Exhaust manifold. Can Anyone Identify what exactly the stuff on the far right exhaust maifold thread is???? I can only describe it as chewing gum, anyone know its purpose? http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0482.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0483.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0487.jpg Cheers again
the_big_man
looks like a locator bit...pulled one of my escort today when changing the manifolds over. It'snot overly important....if exhaust isn't on square it will more than likel blow gases out. Keep cracking with it
268
Haven't updated in a while but the clutch and the Head gasket ae complete. Another escort saved !!! Lucky I bought it as it would of ended up scrap otherwise! Was quoted around the £800 mark to repair both jobs. In the end did it for £170 but it was hard for a first timer!! But the car really pulls now even in 5th and fuel economy is great on it! Couldn't of done it without alot of you!! Just succesfully completed a 500 mile trip to Grimsby and back and it ran great!!! So I did something right. Hopefully Ican get started on the cosmetics now !!!!! Gave it a wash yesterday and got some piccys today! http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0560.jpghttp://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0792.jpghttp://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0783-1.jpghttp://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0797-1.jpghttp://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0789.jpghttp://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0779.jpghttp://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f57/759759/IMAG0798.jpg
