Jones
Do I need a special tool to replace these?
hicksy
You need a press really. For the sake of buggering about its easier to replace the whole arm (i know it costs more but then you know its all good) Ive just got 2 lower arms and all the nuts and bolts for my RS for £35 (staff rates mind )

Jones
If I can get the arm off easily enough without special tools I can take it to the college and get them to do it for free.
SLEEMAN
For the price and labour you gonna do to it you might as well replace them as you can get decent ones for a good price like for example lemforder arms from euro car parts use the discount codes online job done! Then you can practise on your old arms at college!
Jones
Can get a bush for 5-10 quid, an arm costs 25-30... If the arm is in good nick I don't see the point in replacing it.
SLEEMAN
It just make the job easier in a sense! Could say upgrade them to poly bushes last a lot longer

I wish lol Can get a bush for 5-10 quid, an arm costs 25-30... If the arm is in good nick I don't see the point in replacing it. Ive owned 5 Escorts and all of them have had problems with the lower arms, if you try and do the bush you will realise why its worth just getting a whole arm
Jones
Are the arms on these fairly easy to replace?
sidrick
The arms are 15 minutes per side to replace, really easy, just 3 bolts. The arm has to come off to do the bush, so as Hicksy said, it makes more sense to replace the arm and have 2 new bushes and a ball joint.
Jones
True true. I'll probably just replace both front lower arms then before the MOT.
Jones
On the MOT certificate it says... "OSF rear lower suspension arm bush" I'm assuming that's the drivers side, lower control arm, bush furthest to the back... ?

You wouldn't replace just one bush on a wishbone. **But yes, it's likely to be the rear bush. Edited December 5, 2012 by sidrick
Markc
My finesse is currently on 161k and 100k of this is from me in 6 years so i have been through quite a few pairs of arms trying firstline, QH, etc and finally genuine.I really cant stress enough the difference between genuine arms and pattern ones. - they are cheap for a reason! The rubber used in the pattern arms are shite and do not last for age or milage you will be changing them every 6-12 months depending how you use the car.genuine arms last and just make the car feel right again. change the front ARB links while your under there as well. these dont need to be genuine items due to the nature of what they do but it will help you to have precision steering as this is another thing that most cars suffer from. Jones
Where can I get the ARB links from? Assuming a few spanners and some penetrating oil is all I need to change them.
