turbo conversion on 1.8 zetec

reading an how to guide found on Google, the guy is using a 1.8 lump, to lower compression he made a spacer plate of a thickness of 2.5mm my question is are there any pistons that fit a 1.8 to handle power for a turbo surely your limited on boost and would melt pistons with a spacer? he says it would be good for up to 250bhp?

also hes using an efi manifold with megasqurit mangement, would all this plug into my original 1.6 wiring loom. as on my 1.6 engine my throttle body is mounted to a plastic intake manifold so would the wiring be different.

Wossner and IIRC Accralite make suitable pistons for the 1.8, but you can also use some Audi 1.8 turbo pistons with some modification (to the rod and possibly piston). Depends what you want to do and your ability really.

i have always wanted to drop in a turbo lump as 2l are getting harder to source that are decent i was looking into 1.8 i dont want to go mad looking for around 180- 200 bhp just enough play with . so would the standard pistons cope.

a few people have used a decompression plate to turbo a zetec and 180-200 is what most conversions achieve with reliability.

thanks for the link i did try and use search but got nothing found or somthing about 3 letters or words probley wernt doing it right have been on Google and been reading alot of topics but still confused about inlet setup.

A 2mm de-comp plate is a bit thick for a 1.8, although if you only want to run one head gasket with it then it's not too bad I suppose. I would prefer to use two head gaskets and a thinner de-comp plate which would be more flexible and potentially offer better sealing.

I'd go down the pistons route though...

been searching the web for info and can see where your coming from with regards to double gasket i have read some threads using two gasket with 1.5mm plate but then it wouldn't be ideal as there would be that little bit of movement with two gasket some have used 2mm plate with a metal focus gasket by wedging the plate onto the head with dowels (don't know if i said that right little round metal things that sit in the block) and this seemed to work the bloke manage 16psi with a tad over 200bhp with only a fast road cam and all standard internals as for pistons unless i can get some cheap when i get round to doing this conversion i have to stick to a budget just after that little bit of power but not extreme.

Most people who talk about this haven't done it themselves.

What I can assure you of, though, is noone is making an honest 200bhp+ on standard valve springs.

I made 200hp at the front hubs with about 0.7 bar boost on a T25 turbocharger.

i don't doubt your knowledge and appreciate you info but what i previously mentioned was from another forum in which a guy had a fiesta rs and dropped in a 1.8 zetec using t3 with cossie management with cossie injectors and fast road cam he showed the whole build in his thread. but when he turned boost up his home made injector rail was not sitting right and melted the pistons or something.

Sounds like a great conversion. I'd definitely use that as a reference.

i said it was a fiesta but going back to it it was a s1 rs, site was www.zetec-turbo.co.uk looks like it was done awhile ago as 2003 was mentioned but reckon they got 235bhp @ 17psi and still running good sounds impressive but not on my budget. just want a simple cheap reliable conversion.

If there was such a things as a simple, cheap and reliable zetec turbo conversion then we'd have more than a handful of them from the 213654786534092187349873265872658321457984265032175798465831

098569382165686 threads that have been started on here asking about the conversion.

To do it properly costs a lot of money. For similar money you can have your pick of German or Japanese motors that came turbocharged out of the factory, go faster, look better and will more resale value than an Escort turbo shed-build.

By all means if you have £3.5-4k to spend on the car then go for it, but a lot of people (we're all guilty of it) make grand plans without looking at the basic monetary facts first.

i have been looking at the basic monetary facts and been researching a lot into this before i waste any money building something i don't understand, there have been a lot of topics on different builds that have been built for under a grand, i wouldn't spend 3.5-4k on an escort but for people like myself who cannot afford a lot and would like to upgrade to a turbo, budget builds seem to be the way for me, as for saying 3.5-4k im guessing that would include having high spec components and would be able to get a decent bhp figure also im guessing there would be labour cost included in this 3.5-4k .

for me being able to build a budget turbo by myself is a learning experience for me and to gain knowledge on mechanics im no way expecting a powerful turbo with ridiculous bhp just somthing with alittle power and that turbo feel
