Insurance for the younger driver.

CP Escort

Recommended Posts

Hi, There! Just wondering if there was such a thing as cheap isurance for me, as I am 17 just passed my test and have a mk 6 escort 1.6 Zetec. I have had the car since I was 16 and have undone every nut, bolt, screw (ect) and replaced them with stainless steel ones (costing me alot of money!), I even spend money on 98ron fuel and facy oil. (costing me even more Money!!!!).

My dilema is this insurance, :nutter: :vangry: Having survived the endless saga of, "Fill out one form and confused does all the leg work!" somewhat forgetting in the advert, that the so called "One form," is 6 pages long, the cheapest isurance quote for me to be "Amazed," by was infact 2 grand?!.. :jaw: ;( Which I thought was quite steep seen as I live on an island with only 27,000 peole on it (Shetland).

So I would like help with the following a) Cheap insurance (Funny I said that!) and b) Some customisations I could add which would have little if any effect on my rediculus isurance premium.

Hiya, try giving our other Insurance sponsor a try, I tried these last week for my girlfriend (1st car / provisional license) and it was as much as a reasonable price as we are going to get.

Dont forget if you are a member too you'll get 15% discount with adian flux

I used all the supermarket insurance companies when I was 17 (tescos then asda) with my 1.6. I use direct line now as i'm 23 and thats the cheapest I can find anywhere. Price comparison sites are pretty poor. I have been doing my renewals, and I found my cheapest quote not them. Direct line dont come up on price comparison sites either. Maybe get a parent to go first driver and you second? worked out cheaper for my friends. Direct line gives second drivers no claims too.

Thanks guys, I am waiting for an email from adrian flux (Is that spelt right?) hopefully good! I tried to go 2nd driver and it was infact with direct-line but, they basically stuck two fingers up my nose and that was it. Seriously as soon as I said, "Yes, it is a 1.6," the phone went down so, not so good there!

Direct line do not give you your own no claims as a named driver; they give you discount on any "product" you purchase from them.

Which you then use to buy a full policy with them, and after a year move somewhere else hopefully with all the years no claims in one renewal letter? Never have i done this as direct line has always been cheapest for me. 1.8Ghia X fully comp plus girl friend named, £290. Im 23 though.

Unlucky younguns. We have all been there.

There is not any mods you can do without changing the price unless you dont tell them, which could bite you in the arse one day, i wanted a bigger car for my first but it was at 19 so mine is 1600 TPFT, pass plus lowered mine by 300 quids so might want to try that.

In regard to insurance friendly customisations

1. Colour coding - i.e rubbing strips, mirrors, boot lock and handles.

2. Drill the airbox

3. Nice new number plates.

4. Clear or colour matched side repeaters.

5. Ford Alloys.

6. Legal bulbs (Ice blue etc.)

7. Wash and Wax the car stupid!!

Tesco are "cheap" for insurance, for young drivers, but not very good customer service, add and mods and they will want seriously stupid large amounts of money!

Avoid Endsleigh like the plague

Adrian flux are cheap.... with EVO discount!

I may be considrably older than the newbie drivers but ...

1. I found Tesco's incredibly cheap. (Yeah I'm older!) But when I added mods they wanted no extra money. I was Fully Comp.

2. Endsleigh I'm still with now after selling the Escort last year. Cheap, fair, and had no problems at all. Again, when I added mods to the Escort I did'nt need to pay extra. Only difference between them and Tesco was the Stereo/ICE cover. Tesco was upto £1000, and Endsleigh is £500. Again, Fully Comp.

3. I'd personally avoid Adrian Flux like the plague. They quoted me a ridiculous amount, customer service is pants, and the horror stories of friends that have had to make a claim. Some have taken years to finally get a payout from them, as they have a habit of changing things to suit themselves when a claim is made.

I would say, cheapest is'nt always best. Yes it is for your wallet, but possibly not in the long run when you need to make a claim. Many of my friends have found that out.

We're with Performance Direct with the Vectra ... not the cheapest, but customer service is great, and everything mod wise is listed. I prefer to pay a bit more for the added peace of mind.

I'd also recommend that you DON'T use Norwich Union. You call them to add something, and you speak to an Indian who you cannot understand, they don't understand you, and screw up the insurance policy. Been there and done that with them, useless.

As I said, I have had the car since I was 16 and it has been completely rebult, (Apart from the engine and gerbox) and have pretty much had it under-covers. It is also washed every other week and waxed every 2nd month or so.

Anyway 1 down, 6 to go! And thanks! :thumb:
