smithyandco
I've asked my insurance co a couple of times about the mods on mine... They have told me if it's an OEM part regardless of the origin (as long as it's Ford - So Mondy ST24, RS XR3 etc) and it's not a performance enhancing mod like engine changes/mods then they don't need to know. But they are aware of them so and problems can't come back on me! So the Fiesta Si alloys and RS bumper are safe... so will the RS lights when I get them... Spats (as long as they are genuine Ford) and maybe Puma or them Mondy alloys would be fine. But if I touched it will bits from Halfords I'll get raped by them... So I think it depends on the insurance company and their policies on modified cars

smithyandco
Whos that with phil?Used Insurance Connections as a broker... they get you a decent price if you scored high in both driving tests.http://www.insurance-connections.co.uk/The actual insurer... not sure... It's on the paperwork/cert - But IC have informed the actual insurer who gave the info back about the mods.So as far as I'm concerned it's all above board and as I say I've confirmed it a couple of times to be on the safe side... Then again Fortis through HSBC were the same about mods...
Fat Del
This thing about standard Ford parts being OK... My new bumper is a genuine Ford Part that came on other models of escorts so I should be fine with that? The lights are standard Ford one's, all be it tinted. I'll give 'em a call Tuesday anyway to clear things up. Bluliz has gotten me into thinking about an RST Lump so i'm sure the insurance company will love that

cargy
Not declaring your mods (although I agree there is large variation in what different companies consider to be mods) could be expensive in the long run! Tom has, quite rightly, given the moral grounds; any damage sustained by innocent third parties (such as property , injury, or death!) may not be covered. That should be enough for most civilised peeps with a social conscience.. But knowing human nature as I do, maybe it's better to point out that damage to your own car (even if you were completely not at fault) is unlikely to be covered, leaving you stuffed and heavily out of pocket. You could also find your car confiscated and a prosecution even after a quite minor accident. Up to you, at the end of the day! I'm sure a large percentage of modified vehicles out there are technically uninsured and, while the odds are good that you can get away with it, anyone getting caught would only have themselves to blame if it all went horribly wrong. lairdie
i have spoken to a few insurance loss adjusters about this problem, from a financial point of view if you fit 17 inch alloysand the insurance company have to buy a tyre for your car, your insured for a forty quid tyre but the ones you have are 80 quidthey dont like surprises. i had a customer bought a second hand vw bora. 17 inch alloys, front splitter, boot spoiler, tinted windowshe was driving to work, 2 guys racing forced him to swerve off the road and he hit some big stones at the road side.he split the bumper and splitter, damaged the sill and boot floor, 2 alloys and tyres and his spare wheel.insurance engineer binned the claim and they gave him his premium back.if you make your car more attractive to thieves, always make it harder to steal, this helps keep your premiums down
ryan_gwa
My car is fully insured regarding what I have declared. EVERYTHING I have done to my Si has been phoned through and reported. Even tho I'm pretty much driving my old GTi! Thats including very small things like smoked side reps. Edited May 5, 2008 by ryan_gwa
