McRic
At my Mums just now cos her pc is running slow as hell. I have done a virus scan, cookie scan, disc cleanup and am now doing a defrag. In the defrag screen it states acer(c:) & acerdata(d:) The first being ntfs and the latter fat32 Is this normal? I thought that means it's running 2 op systems at once? Well saying I don't know much about pc's though. Everytime I come to visit the pc is running slow again. All she does is use it for internet and photos etc. Can anyone shine any light into what I can do to speed the thing up? Running XP It's a AMD semperon 3400+ 1.81 ghz, 768mb of ram if that means owt
stoo2000
A bit more RAM wouldnt hurt, the two drives are how alot of Acers etc come setup you might find the d:\ drive has nothing on it (or its a recovery drive)
sidrick
http://www.raktron.com/turbopc/images/photos2.jpg That'll sort it. It either has 2 hard drives, or two partitions on the one drive. It's normal. Do a spyware scan(spybot), disable startup items that aren't needed (start>run>msconfig>startup), get another gig of RAM in there. How would I know what items aint needed? Never knew there was a pc section on here now! Also what type of ram would it use, can I buy it and simply slot it in and it'll work? Squiz
system mechanic pro is a damn good software to keep the pc clean and get rid of unwanted crap..You can get it as a free trial download for a month and it isnt expensive to licence....Try downloading that and cleaning your system out properly with it
Bravo81
Dont disable everything :-| I suggest running Spybot Search and Destroy..a free scanning tool. Then take the PC to the nearest PC shop and get a RAM upgrade of 1Gig like suggested above.A faster CPU might come in handy to. How much space is left on the C: drive? Regards, Dean. sidrick
McRic, There are various types of ram, but that system will most likely be DDR2. This is widely available and cheap. It's very easy to replace yourself, but you'd need to check that you have room for expansion before trying to add more, otherwise you will have to remove one stick to put in another of a higher capacity. Whip off the side of the box, and take a sneaky. Edited March 6, 2009 by PeeWee

scottg17
Good start would be downloading and running malware bytes. its a great AV and spyware remover and will remove anything.if that dont work then id try disabling un-needed startup programmes/services that would be a good starting point
