Lee_2f2f
Also, take a look here --> Tensilica Apparently these Diamond processors have been used in DAW's before and there excellent? I wouldnt know as I have no reason for a DAW lol. Im building one myself, I dont want to buy a ready built pc. I know that Pete, just thought it might shed some more light for you Edited March 26, 2009 by Escort_2f2f
Stu
To be honest asking for 'opinion', especially having a 'poll' is a bit silly for this. You know what your budget is and all the CPU's available have been benchmarked and you can easily find out what does what with plenty of comparisons. Asking for personal opinion is irrelevant in this context. And for the AMD fanboys, the triple core processors are broken quad core ones (although Intel do some similar tactics on some stuff). The choice is simple: 1. Choose budget2. Find the highest priced CPU from each manufacturer within your budget.3. Find an online benchmark, comparison (preferably both processors done in the same test - likely if you look hard enough).4. Purchase.
PeeWee
Your actually quite right tbh stu, plus my build should probably be discussed within the music community.I just wondered on our current members views as i know theres a few on here like yourself & foxdie who are rather clued up on comparisons. trickydicky
And for the AMD fanboys, the triple core processors are broken quad core ones (although Intel do some similar tactics on some stuff). Alas the man is right. AMD have only managed to claw back some ground on Intel in the latest CPUs (£200+).E5200 sounds about right for you http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148715 It is one of the newer versions of C2D and has better architechture etc. Try these forums for Computer questions (This is the other forum that I am active on) http://www.buildyourown.org.uk/forums/ Tricky
PeeWee
As asked before is dual core different to core 2 duo?
trickydicky
Yes. Core 2 Duo is newer Architecture. And Core 2 Duo is the name given to the Intel processors. Dual core is just the name for a processor with 2 cores. Edited March 26, 2009 by trickydicky
PeeWee
Ahh right! so the dual core i linked too (intel) is the older & not as good?

mk6cabby
Pete, I currently am running the Phenom, with 4gb of ram, its runs really well. ( vista ultimate etc.. ) But i'm a intel fiend thru and thru so it took alot to use AMD. Never had a system run so sweetly, not even a Intel Processor. Stu
mk6cabby ^^ exactly the kind of comments that make this poll pointless, no offence. Your comment would be valid if you had compared an identical clock-speed Intel system side-by-side and found the AMD to out-perform the Intel. PeeWee- View intel chips by order of die thickness (eg, 45nm), number of cores, front-side-bus speed and the amount of cache. The wafer thickness is the main differentiator between the chip series' and the current good stuff is 45nm. This means it requires less power to do more because less heat is being generated/wasted. The 45nm quad core processors are 95W TDP and typically idle around 5 watts! AMD do, however, have some low power chips too, but they don't perform as well as the Intel equivalent. CPU's aren't really specialist for music bods (although i'm sure you'll get a bunch of 'experts' offering useless opinion). The thing that matters most on music systems (i used to compose on computers, since about 1987, but dont do anything anymore ) is the latency of the soundcard, although that's only really an issue if you're driving outboard devices and then mixing them down seperately. If you're doing just soft synths etc then it doesnt matter as you write the output direct to disk when mastering.
mk6cabby
Yep i understand what you said Stu, and i do agree. I was just offering Pete my advice, considering i'm using the set up he was asking about. To be honest, If i had the chance i would stick with Intel.. But this package i bought came in cheaper than the Intel Equivelent.
PeeWee
Cheers for the heads up Stu, looking at an intel core2 quad atm at around 150.My music includes soft vsti synths/ vst effects, guitar & vocal recording via an echo mia audio card & a range of outboard effects, its all plumbed into an analogue mixer so basically the more cpu & memory the better. Gonzo0
Id go for a Intel Corei7 220 They overclock great, got mine up to 3.5ghz with an Akasa Nero cooler Think it was only bout £150 aswell
trickydicky
Only problem with that is hes going to have to spend that again on a motherboard to support i7, and then for the DDR3 RAM...
