Your requirement:

"what Id want is the ability to access stored music and video via a small monitor and/or interface of some kind dependant on wether the monitor would be touchscreen obviously....basically a simple media pc built primarily for media purposes."

You don't need a incar PC. You need a device called a stereo. Plenty out there, with screen, designed to fit in the car most now with storage or USB support so that you can use as media centre.

Whats the point in any PC solution if your not using any of the additional features that will give you!

can you find a decent "stereo" that has....

Decent sized HDD

USB support

Memory card support

decent sized touchscreen

DVD/Multi format support

and the ability to increase functions when desired

........for under £300?

Not looked but I wouldn't have thought you'd be to far off the price, Sounds like you've not checked either since your doubting it.

Also, note when buying anything with harddrive for in car - I had a USB harddrive for my stereo for music. Left it in the car overnight as no point taking it in everyday and on cold mornings the drive wouldn't spin up. Okay in normal weather but not winter. Got USB stick instead and it works flawlessly. So static memory or Solid State Harddrive (I assume works) would be my recommendation.
