Im undergoing a tech rebellion I swear!

right basically Ive been updating a surveying report on the building site the firm I work for has just won the contract too.

Now Id saved it MY DOCUMENTS as you do and clearly labelled it, after that Ive simply hit SAVE as appose to SAVE AS as its just automatic obviously.

only thing is even tho Ive got the document up on screen in WORD Ive just hit save and for want of a better description the file simply disappeared from the file location entirely even though it had been there a moment ago (I still have it up on screen so the document isnt lost even if the saved fail has gone bye byes)....

As this is likely another result of my feckin about with 7's settings the other day or maybe because I backed up my files then restored them Im at a loss as to what the solution is.

Just incase....Im simply gonna print out the report now and use my scanner word recognition software to convert is back to a file on either my office pc or the homes main pc (least that way Ill have a hard copy too), that way if the file has indeed "done a bunk" least my gaffer wont be reaching for the Vaseline after he requests the report via email.

So any ideas on what Ive fecked up now?

btw I did a search and couldn't locate the file barring the one I have open in Word.

Ps..... sorry for the continued issues, it doesnt like me

Walk away from the PC.

That'd be my Layman's response aye, but unfortunately its required for work purposes and porn surfing (Television X just doesnt have the variance I like)

It seems to be any just this document, Ive saved a couple of test documents in the same way and even altered and saved a previous document, all went peachy, just the one mentioned isn't havin any of it.

seems to work fine on the missus tho (the one I bought off PeeWee) so least I wont be feeling "the sting" later.

'Save as'...?

If you mean try that, I did, same result.

unless I can be sure it wont do it to me again (specially as this time I was lucky enough to note it) I think Ill be using the missus pc and backing up to flash drives ALOT.

that could of been several weeks of work down the tubes there, my Gaffer would have definitely not been impressed and worse still Id have had to tell our surveyor to redo the report which he wouldn't have enjoyed..... even tho he's a bit of a yuppie nerd....... He quite the scary big lad ;( .

Even worse still than a being tongue lashed by my boss and thrashed by a angry nerd...... Id have lost my "yer you can work from home aslong as your on call whenever" status, Id rather die.

Im technically a "consultant" on paper......... Im "consulted" when required, when Im not I dont sit there and wait to be...... go figure.

Using what version of office? it came with 7 pro so I assume the latest?

Can you save to the desktop? crap I didn't try that!

Save as, choose the desktop. again it didn't occur to me to try that

Can you save as 2003 document if using office 07? by the time I created this thread Id become so shite scared of loosing the lot I didn't dare try feckall but save to the flash drive

Have you performed a search on said document to see exactly where it is saving?I did when the document was open and it showed only the location/program I had it open in as far as I could tell

I have since saved it to the pc you sold me and that windows 7 isn't having a problem atall with it so its looking more and more like its something Ive done or connected to my switching off the security options mentioned in the other thread.

Just as a side note I was requiring the Office version ie 2003/2007/2010, Office doesn't come along included with operating systems (usually a cut down or trial version may be bundled with the system), again, Having Windows 7 doesn't mean you have a particular office version or even office at all as it isn't part of an OS. As for "Pro" I have no idea what you mean I'm afraid unless your using wordpad which is included with Microsoft OS's.

Your search had brought up the version you were working on, not until you save & exit will you find the desired file and its current location. Try it now its saved and search your whole C drive.

You missed what I was saying.

the file already existed and Id previously saved it to MY DOCUMENTS without incident, all I was doing when it scoobied was updating the existing file with additional and corrected data from the Surveyor and quantity supplier.

granted the mystical stuff that rules how a computer does the things it does can and does elude me at times however I know that the existing file remains as it is in place until such time as I decide to over-right it with the updated info........ it shouldn't have simply vanished when I tried to do just that.

the original file should have been there until such time as I changed it or removed it in other words.

Can't you go into Word, select the missing document from the recent documents list, then hit save as and see where it is?

Of course he could, but then this is Shaw remember. :innocent:

git.

I think I mentioned how I tried just as Sid suggested and everything went to exactly were I asked it too..... no signs of "vanishing"

over-write* (before whatshisface chirps in)

A computer will always do what you tell it to do, but seldom what you want it to do.
