Escort van revival

Ive had the van for a year now. Come mot time I had to take it off the road, this was due to the sills being rusty as and the engine wasn't registered on the v5 and the dvla won't do it without proof of purchase, I bought the van like this with a handwritten receipt for a Gti that was the donor car. No v5 for the cpdonor car, which I was told was sufficient to register it. Apparently not.

Stuck it on eBay with a reserve and it didn't sell so I'm gonna make a project out of it.

This is how the van looked before, i have had a previous project thread but this is a new start so a new thread

This is one of the rusty sills, the other side isnt quite as bad

So,,, this evening I started with the renovation. I took most of the stuff out but was beaten by the weather, rain and night fall. I'm going to completely strip it out. All the wires etc are coming out so when I get a donor car, either if I'm feeling up to it or a Gti for ease, I can swap the whole lot in. For now though its cosmetics and fixes

Little bit or rust inside but fairly tidy in the circled areas but these should be easy ish to deal with. I ripped the bottom part of the soundproof ing out as it was damp and smelt a bit pissy

This is my rough plans, though these may change. Any thoughts

Any thoughts or advice are welcome. This is my first real project like this so no doubt I'll get stuck and need help.

This van is beautiful !! I seen it on ebay and would have loved to have had it... however for me to insure it i would be looking at about 8k :( colour code the handles, roof strips, and bumpers and keep the grille black with the laguna splitter and some wind deflectors and it would look awesome. Good luck with the project :thumb:

Thanks for the kind comments. I know its not to everyone taste but i like it.

12k for insurance, bloody hell. I'm moving out of London to my girlfriends at the end of the year. I'm hoping my insurance will plumit then. My first car was a saxo ver when I was 17. I paid £2.5k tpft for that. Was yound and had more money than I should have cause I lived at home. I still got quotes of over 2k on a scooby sti. I'm 27.

At least petrols gone down a bit though.

probably going to take a while if I'm honest. got a few plans for the 350 aswell. plus work commitments for the rest of the "warmer" months.

ill get pics up of the interior bits once they're all primed up. done half and run out of primer. just ordered some more from ebay. gone for satin black for the interior bits, gonna have a few white bits in there. gear and handbrake surrounds, dial surround and the bit above the glove box.

had a fiddle with the dial as i want to change all the lights to blue, how do you get the green film out of the dials??

Got a few more bits out earlier. The rest of the soundproofing, door cards, heater bits, apart from one pipe near the steering column, I don't think that will come out till the rest is out.

Gonna have to leave the wires for a bit cause I need to be able to move it. Tried to push it the other day but the brakes had seized where it had been sat so long and needed to start it up to get it rolling again.

Little bit of surface rust in there but not too bad overall. There is a small amout in the edges that will need cutting out

Found this in there but it wasnt connected to anything, anyone know what it is for?

I also had a better look underneath, particularly around a couple of areas I've been advised to check, all is quite tidy. There is a small amount of rust near to the rear damper mounts but nothing major, I pushed a screwdriver into it quite hard and it didn't go through, a little bit of flaking but it should be easy enough to sort out. I hope. Fingers crossed.

I'm actually really enjoying this so far and all I've done is take the interior apart, I can't wait to have a crack at welding and when I get round to fitting the new engine and loom and bits.

well i ordered these so I guess I've decided what engine route I'm taking. bit of an impulse buy and far to early to be getting bits like this but het ho.

been doing a bit of tidying inside. keep finding little patches of surface rust but nothing major. going to order a dremel with appropriate attachments. should make my life a lot easier.

found in the corners of the van that there is a big gap on both sides, filled with some sort of white filler, the gap looks like its supposed to be there. think the worst of the rust is on the outer sills which is good, hopeful ill be able to use the dremel to clean up the floor and internal bits near it back to bare metal, and then paint it with hammerite to seal it. obviously the filler will have to be redone.

I've ordered some metal sheet incase i need it. if i don't I'm sure ill be able to find something to do with it.

ill get some more pics up tomorrow

I also wanna get some red ford badges but they seem quite dear for what they are. anyone know of somewhere cheap to get them??

this is in the strut part, i don't know if thats the right name for it, theres a few little bits like this but all small enough to cut out and patch with out worrying about it affecting the strength

gave it a clean up, can't really do much else for now, I'm just waiting on tools. ordered a dremel to get to the rust and no doubt loads of other bits, need to pick a grinder up from my old man and then i need to get a welder, I've found a suitable one. keeping an eye out for a used one but think ill end up buying new.

also whats the putty stuff in the edges called??
