Analogue clock bulb

Hi !

Can anyone tell me how to change the bulb in the analogue time clock in the middle of the dash on a 1998 Escort Ghia ?

Many Thanks

1. remove dash binnacle (two torque head screws top, two bottom)

2. remove torque screw from right hand side of upper centre console fascia (revealed once binnacle is out)

3. remove 3x heater/fan controls (these pull out with relative ease, no screws or fastenings)

4. remove torque head screw from behind central control switch (revealed when switch is removed)

5. carefully prise the centre section outwards away from dash (do not try and pull it clear as the wiring is still connected at the rear)

6. the two bulbs are now easily accessible and can be removed by simply a quarter turn anti-clockwise (the reverse for fitting newuns)

Think you have described how to change them on a mk5/5b.

On a mk6 undo the 2 screws above dials, pull off heater control knobs, pull facia away from dash (losing most of the spring clips in the process), should be able to see the bulbs (509s) if not unplug all switches so that facia pulls out further.

haha - remove facia as applicable to your vehicle and the bulbs can be found at the back of the clock unit and are changed easily with quarter turn anti-clockwise. refitting is the reverse of removal. what a cop out description :D :innocent:

It works for Haynes manuals

Seriously, the guy asked for help and was given ways of doing it for different marks of escort, yes it is basically your description but he may not know how to remove the facia so why is that a cop out description.

Sorry, mine was a cop out description for the 'remove facia as applicable for your vehicle' just taking the pee from me. Your quite right in that he might not know how to take the facia off, so I shall make amends and give my version as I've taken my mk6 apart too many times:

undo and remove the black cowling from behind steering wheel - 2 torx top and 4 torx underneath, don't forget to remove rubber skirt before pulling out (just push the tabs out from underneath)

I find it easier for later if you remove the indicator stalks - screw at top and then 2 wiring harnesses, 1 each side.

carefully price out using a dining knife, the fog light switch, the heated rear window switch and the knobs for the blower heater (the blower knobs will just pull out)

undo the 2 screws above the instrument cluster on the underside of the top part of the dash

using a plastic spatula or similar, price off the facia, I also pull at the now empty fog button hole. don't pull too far!!!

hear where the clips have sprung off to, I believe there should be 9 in total when you have to look for them.

reach underneath and unplug the heater controls / light adjuster / clock.

facia should then be easily moveable over tthe steerin wheel and into your lap

clock is on the back, you might need a small set of needlenose pliers to remove bulbs (depends on how big your fingers are - I found it easier just to take the back off the clock)

Turn bulb anti clockwise to undo and fit new ones turning clockwise.

(whilst your behind there, change instrument cluster for digi fiesta white face with red needles (see my guide in the 'how to' section), make sure you have blue lights in cluster and when refitting put in 6speed intermittant wiper stalks with relay :P)

Have you found all the clips that pinged off the facia? - get looking, try around the heater ducting, behind the stereo, down behing the centre consol end, those sorts of areas. you ca get away with one or two missing as long as you keep them safe and put them back on next time your behind there, put clips back onto facia clip points, they slide over with the bump bit outwards

put facia into position and reconnct the clock - check the bulbs are working by turning headlights on it's better to do it at this stage than later!

if theyre not working disconnect and remove, turn bulbs 180degrees in holder as they are normally position sensitive and will only work one way.

If the are working - great - reconnect blower control / headlight adjuster.

push the facia back on - note - I aways line up the tabs above the instrument cluster (near where the screws are) and line up from there. make sure you pull the plugs through for the fogs and heated rearscreen, push facia back on. put the 2 large screws back in.

reconnect all buttons and push back on knobs

reconnect indicator stalks and screw back on

put cowling back on making sure the rubber 'skirt' is popped back on before you screw up the top section.

Job done - my applogies for the flippant comment earlier, hope this helps, If you haven't already done it.

actually, I gave him the correct removal technique for the correct model going by the year of escort he referred too so pretty much anything afterwards was pointless.

The reason i put a different method is because yours made no sense to me seeing as i had replaced my dash bulbs the previous week on a similar age MK6 escort, i only had to remove 2 phillips head screws not the 5/6 torx head you described.

also see how to on here;
